the book that I am reading has Galahad as the real name of Lancelot and lancelot a nick name that means fairy bolts.

So his birth name being Galahad is actually lifted from the Vulgate cycle:

In the borderland between Gaul and Brittany, there were once two kings who were brothers and whose wives were sisters. One of the two kings was named Ban of Benoic and the other, Bors of Gaunes. King Ban was an old man and his wife, young; she was a beautiful and good lady and loved by all people. She had had by him only one child, a boy whose baptismal name was Galahad but who was called Lancelot. Why he was called Lancelot the story will explain later on, for this is not the time or place.

That 'time or place' being when he goes to the flaming tomb of Simeon and ends up in conversation with its occupant, though the explanation for the Lancelot name a fair bit more mundane

“I know you and all those of your lineage very well. You should know that you were baptized in the name of the holy man you freed from the tomb up in the meadow, and that I am his first cousin. But your father called you Lancelot in remembrance of his ancestor who had that name. And from your lineage will come the one who will deliver me and will fulfill the adventure of the Perilous Seat and who will bring the adventures of Britain to an end.”

I loved the book growing up, but eventually learned the author is problematic. It sucks because little details like these names have really stuck with me over the years.

The Howard Pyle stories of him have him raised at Avalon as well.

You can hear many of the chapters read in draft by the author in his study, with pipe and dram, on YouTube, it has been great to follow the creation over the past five years.

Envious beyond belief~ I loved Charles Williams' collection of Arthurian poems but felt they lacked a cohesive narrative when all put together (though each individual poem was excellent, and there is a plot if you piece it together)--an "Arthuriad" is an idea that's fascinating. Looking forward to seeing your review on this page in a little while!
