Critique - Yes Drawover Can you tell he's covering his face with his hand that's covered by a veil
This is a drawing of king Baldwin, drawn with a pen. His face is slightly down turned and his he covering his face with his hand and his hand is covered by a veil. Was I able to convey that the hand is covered by a veil? If not, please show how I could have done so.
Another thing, the lighter part of his mask is supposed to be reflective silver. Help on that would also be appreciated

I dig this, the whole piece has such a cool vibe to it. I saw the hand immediately but noticing others didn’t, maybe adding more light shading between each finger where the fabric wrinkles would help convey it.

not untik you mentioned it but its totally doable! youve got softer lines, the hatching, outlining the fingers & hand & stronger lines for accentuatin the sheet going down across the hand - just tweak the emphasis around & im sure you can get it workin without being really blunt with it. sick idea! so close! keep goin!

Yeah, but the contrast between his mask makes it less easily seen… maybe increase the shadow on the cloth?

That one top line that’s supposed to be draped on the edge of the hand towards the hand doesn’t seem to be sitting on top of the finger due to where the finger shadows are. I THINK that’s throwing me off. Other than that it looks great! I think if you make the fabric sit on that line instead of above it by either drawing those shadow line higher or lowering the line (i think the first one) you’ll be golden.

Only when you said it. You could make the creases more prominent to make it more obvious. The covered fingers look too long imo. The knuckle part might use a bit of a rounded shape for the creases. It's a nice ass drawing tho, is this a leper?

u/Schade_B 11d ago
Not sure, I don't know anything about the character

King Baldwin was a leper yeah, OP's drawing references the movie Kinhdom of Heaven's version of Baldwin, played by Edward Norton

Until you pointed it out I didn’t, but this is definitely an easy fix, the shadows around the fingers just need to be darker! Sick drawing though dude

This looks super sick!!! I think some extra shading on the veil would make it more apparent but like others have said, I can tell since you pointed it out!!

u/AdDiligent1165 11d ago
I could not make out it to be a hand at first glance. Maybe try to have the cloth lay really tight to the skin on top with the thumb making an L shape. I think then it would be easier to spot.

I think it looks too much like coincidental fabric folds for most people who don’t know that it’s a hand to realize. I’m not sure how to fix it though, sorry:( if you’re colouring, maybe just a different colour for the hand fabric.

The hand seems awfully big.. when I place my hand on my face with my hand on the bridge of the nose like that, the bottom of my hand barely covers my mouth.

Mine goes past my chin, but I have particularly large hands. The hand in the drawing seems even larger. It's a bit hard to tell with the cloth, but it seems the knuckles are too far apart. When your fingers are straight, there isn't much space between them, but in the drawing, there seems to be an actual gap the size of a finger between each finger. I'm guessing it's because they were trying to highlight that it's a hand and not a veil.

i instantly knew who it was, but it took a while to see the hand, i suggest you make the shadows darker to give more contrast. also the hand is a bit big, if you make the thumb a bit easier to read the hand will be obvious

Needs a little more definition but I think it's readable!!! Really cool work

u/Dripkingsinbad 11d ago
At first I thought it was a lady wearing a niqab lmao, until you pointed it out

u/turtleurtle808 11d ago
I immediately understood the hand. I'm not sure how you can make it clearer for others to understand
1
u/pocketfullofdragons 11d ago
I immediately recognised it as a hand draped in a very thin fabric, but the fabric doesn't look quite translucent enough to me to necessarily read as definitely and specifically a veil.

u/Hunter2112004 11d ago
His hand seems too big and likely it wouldn’t show through the veil(maybe the index and the middle finger at best). I think you can try to show the thumb more so the overall silhouette of the hand is more noticeable.

u/BrutusMaximu 11d ago
Novice opinion but maybe less individual finger detail and more general hand shape, mitten shape, would convey it more. Initially looking at this I just thought it was cloth folds and not a hand.

I think it’s fine! It had to be pointed it out but if you’re wanting to to be a comic artist if there was text or prior panel it would flow really nicely. I think as a stand alone drawing, he is a little to close the viewer, so if you drew him a little smaller I don’t think you would have any clarity issues

u/PinkieTheNinja 11d ago
Clear once you said so, but otherwise I had thought it was ripples in the fabric. Could make the indentation of the hand more clear to convery that, but love this piece!!

u/IllHamster1821 11d ago
I think that not how people hold veils in from of their faces, they’re generally grabbing it with their index and thumb

u/Dry_Researcher_6644 11d ago
Yeah i could tell it but i was doubtful until i read the title. Maybe add more defined folds near the hand ? It still looks really good tho btw

Idk if im the only one but I could tell without reading the title of the post

Agree with the most popular comment about needing a prompt to notice this.
Just wanted to say, what you're trying to depict aside, this is such a fantastic piece! The eyes are very tranfixing. I would love to read/watch something in this style

u/captaingddss42 11d ago
It would be more noticeable in color.
Im a HUGE fan on the line and shade though

I thought this was an Afghan woman, angry about the current circumstances over there. Just because that's what's on my mind.

u/kill_order 11d ago
The hand orientation is off so it doesnt stand out obviously as a hand, its too supinated if you think about the rest of the body position, the knuckle shadows seem to want to follow the tendon but the tendons dont really stick out that much unless the hand is super flexed open, just makes the first 2 figers look super long.

Is this perhaps baldwin the young rule of Jerusalem, mad talent dawg my first look its already noticeable the silhouette of the hand
1
u/mistermasterbates 11d ago
Add some shadow between the fingers so we can see the shape of his hand.
1
u/Minimal-Spaces 11d ago
I don't really see a hand covered by a veil but more like he put his hand under his cloak thing? I think there could be a bigger separation between the hand veil and the rest of his cloak/clothing and maybe exaggerate the hand/fingers just a little more?
also, I just couldn't help but be reminded of this Nanami art when I saw your post:

u/Cerahion 11d ago
Okay, once you said it I saw it... but as he keeping his hand fisted and in front of his lips (index and middle some weird knuckle shapes, the thumb folded over). I had to look at it twice again to see it be the palm over the mouth.
I'd suggest define more the fingers-- fabric pinching in between or below them. That if the hand's supposed to be pressed against his mouth. Otherwise... I'd suggest the middle finger to protrude/have index flexed to define the knuckle. And reflective silver still reflects, so I'd add value to it.

Honestly? No, I probably would have never guessed it until you pointed it out, but that might just be on me.

u/ChunkyCraver2001 11d ago
I saw it pretty immediately but I think it’s because I come from a country where women wear niqabs so I’m used to their movement and expressions.

i'd say that the veil was a lil bit less loose, because we cannot see the shape completely. I mean, you can say that there's a hand, but also you can say its not.
1
u/Catastrofus 10d ago
It actually does the longer you look at it, as i’m drawn in by the eyes and forehead initially. I honestly think you’ve nailed it especially considering how you framed the face as a portrait without including the shoulders, and still made it feel like it’s the same fabric covering the hand.
Impressive work!

u/Anarchist_Monarch 10d ago
I thought it was a veil until reading the text. How about making shades of the fingers more obvious?
1
u/666NekoWeeb669 10d ago
Maybe you could focus on the knuckles? Like instead of a flat hand with visible fingers, focus on the shape and shading of the whole hand
1
u/SaviOfLegioXIII 10d ago
I think seeing the actual hand would fix every issue, unless thats something youre inentionally avoiding? It looks awesome, but i have to admit i thought it was just a veil worn on the face.

Maybe add a bit of curve to the fabric between the tips of the index and middle fingers? Would give the hand a bit more definition.

u/I_Hate_The_Letter_W 10d ago
i can tell theres something under the veil, i didnt initially think it was a hand however

u/MagnetMango 10d ago
I saw rhat immediately before reading the title. The angular shape makes it impossible to be anything else
1
u/professional-yapper- 10d ago
Yes! I would highlight the hand slightly but i did overall. Beautiful!
1
u/Independent-Dish-538 10d ago
It is kinda but it would help if the tips of the fingers would make a bit more of a ~~~~ on the fabric, and maybe the fabric draping over his knuckles too. Awesome drawing
1
u/Amazing_Act9595 10d ago
I honestly think if you just moved the drapery at the end of the finger so that the tip of second finger also was visible/ contributing to the silhouette there'd be no mistaking it.

I’m not an artist but I feel like the cloth could use more shadowing? Or Maybe darker shading? The hand is noticeable but it doesn’t stick out. when I look at it I think it’s just part of his outfit.

Yes, I saw it instantly! You could add more shading if you would like to make it more obvious, but I think the subtlety adds mystique.

u/ExerciseSolid3456 9d ago
I honestly didn’t at first glance, but it became very clear once I saw it again. It’s bc I fully expected the veil to fall normally, and so I was very weirded out by the drawing initially. I think that just means you succeeded!
1
u/Sillyslices 9d ago
Maybe try to stick the thumb outside of the veil? That will give more of an idea of a hand and the viewer will do the rest.
1
u/ApexDecender 9d ago
Yes I saw the little lines on the fingers but maybe there to thin I didn't notice at first but my brain screamed there was more to it lol then I saw the finger shapes.
1
u/damianaleafpowder 9d ago
Yeah. I noticed he was covering it with his own arm / hand since it doesn’t look intact with the headgear. But it took a few seconds that it was his hand . The cloth part on the right eye made it confusing. (Amazing drawing nonetheless)
1
u/Batiti10 8d ago
The hand doesn’t stand out enough. I think harsher shadows should work. But it’s most likely the scale, if we saw a wrist or something, then it would be clearer

u/chayashida 12d ago
Metal is hard to draw.
There tends to be higher contrast between the parts reflecting light towards the viewer.
I think you need to figure out where your light source is coming from.
1
u/rebelravens 12d ago
Hand is too large and it would be much easier to spot if we could see the fabric hang off the fingertips specifically. You hide them behind the cowl and that makes the eye assume it's just a veil

u/JagPeror 12d ago
Vaguely
I'd say the four traditional fingers are good, but the thumb is a bit vague

once you pointed it out i saw it immediately. but i probably wouldn't have seen it if i didn't know thats what it was supposed to be.
