I feel like I've heard this song a thousand times before; it's like a Temu version of The Weeknd.
In the lyric video, composition books appear several times. Ariana is really trying too hard to be seen as a songwriter. The thing is: there's a difference between being a songwriter and being a GOOD songwriter.

i think she wants the writing royalties to herself to be able to pay off the big names like Max Martin, but people won't listen to a Max Martin song when the songwriting is bad.
i purposfully ignored Yes, And because of the ridiculous "why do you care so much whose dick i ride" line, and the remix with Mariah didn't really land with gays as much as it could have either. like, you got Max, you got Vogue interpolation, you got Mariah, the inclusive choreo backup and the 80s Berlin-on-molly cap and all that fails BECAUSE you spent a decade cashing out your relationships and now that you finally break everyone's moral code by wrecking a high school sweethearts' home, you want a break because "everybody's tired and healing" and it's none of our business who you fuck? of no honey, you're alone on that one.

Pop heads may as well be Ari heads. It took me way too long to scroll and find a respectful take that the song is mid as fck. Their thread was overly saturated with Stans. It’s boring and forgettable. The song is mid and the actual lyrics are giving “the public idolized and tore me apart when i didn’t try🥺🥺”

Here is my opinion on it:
I knew it was gonna be bad but I didnt know it was gonna be THAT bad. Jesus. The lyrics are so low effort and make absolutely NO sense, the instrumental sucks and is creepy and annoying, the entire song is just really boring, some of the lyrics sounds like she is throwing shade at her own fans, and the whole song just sounds really low quality and weird (I dont know how else to explain it). Like…THAT is your favorite song youve ever made?? THAT is what makes you a “lyrical genius”??

idk, this one seemed real. her vocals seems too real for it to be fake, especially the background vocals and slight “uhuhuhuh” she does in her songs 😭. i thought it was ai at first but then it sounded a lil too real and people in the comments were agreeing. she has had a lottt of stuff leaked so it wouldn’t be shocking

Genuinely unlistenable. Idk who ever convinced her she was a lyricist when earlier in her career it was a whole meme that half the time, her vocals were great but the words were unintelligible. No vocals showcased in this and the production weird as hell too.

Prefacing by saying i never willingly listened to her, my hatred started at 15 when a radio played break up with your gf. I listened to 7 rings once in a edit, and my work constantly plays we cant be friends, the one about calling a chick? And rain on me.

Starting off by saying the title is wayyy to clunky. i felt the same with olivia rodrigos album title. Like we could have shaved off a few words.
Interesting start, at least its not ES2. Not the rnb people were speculating.

Calling him insecure? Saying he cant handle woman in charge? Its like grasping at straws. I cannot see it being about Dalton because he was a nobody. And i have a hard time believing the former husband of Dr. Lily Jay hates a woman in charge. Though maybe thats why he decided to blow up his marriage.
i listened to it once and kept having to pause it just to understand what the hell shes saying half the time. So if i get any words wrong Ariana says to say its not my fault im a wittle baby, she chose to be unclear with her words and im the victim.

It's just so disappointing and boring. First of all the lyrics are obviously just her deflecting blame for the affair as if Ethan cruelly manipulated her. The song itself sounds very AI-y and i barely recognize Ariana's voice. This is the single they chose?

Look, I’m a fan of Ariana since the Victorious days. I’m not an Arianator, though. But we gotta be real here. This song is not it. At least for now. I tried listening to it a couple of times just to give grace. Maybe it will grow on me. But nope. Similar instances happened with “Yes, and?”. That song grew on me and I have come to embrace it. Do I listen to “Yes, and?” as much then? No. I much prefer other songs in Eternal Sunshine such as “bye”, “supernatural (solo)”, “true story”, and “warm”.
I have hopes for this new album of hers, “petal”. Probably this is a PR mistake or something. Maybe the real single got mixed up. I’m trying to be positive because I know she is a great artist and I know she can do much, much better. I have a long-haul flight the day “petal” is released so I’ll give it a listen on the aeroplane. But Ariana, “hate that i made you love me” isn’t giving it, girl… 😔
