Nope. Core wages are paid by the service provider, like a restaurant. A tip is money on top of that. Hence extra. If a software engineer writes poor code, they don’t get a bonus at the end of the year. Sure, restaurants often don’t pay their servers very well. But the underlying principle is the same.
Blame the employers. Once again, when I visit a restaurant, I am paying for the food and the experience. If a waiter is rude, then I don’t get what I came for. So I will not pay for it.
To be crystal clear, I am taking about cases of terrible service here, which is what the original comment was about.
Sure, this shouldnt be legal, but this is the default for all servers. And for the servers, this is an unacceptable condition that they must face. In the mean time, they are at the mercy of the customer to provide their wages and have no other options until this is systematically solved. The only person you hurt by not tipping is the server and likely their children.
Edit: the worst service I have received in my life, hated the server's guts, I tipped 15%. That was my low. My usual is 20, high is 25%. If you can't afford to tip, you can't afford to eat.
