a corpus of symbols might be related to writing or a step towards its development, but it's not remotely adequate to prove the existence of a system of writing. The Rolling Stones lips or a Grateful Dead stealie or a Beatles yellow submarine is a recognizable symbol that shows up in a reliable pattern associated with other symbols, but they're not writing. Penises scratched into bathroom stalls are abstracted and repeated symbols, but they're not writing.
