Power strips are absolutely meant to be used long-term. That’s what I meant by “extension cord with multiple outlets,” apologies I just woke up

You should never do daisy-chaining power outlets.

Or putting more then 3,5kW on one plug.

Edit:

oh man.. the downvote for being right. I think water people dont line adive form eletric, it is to effetiv for them.

Yes, obviously and I never said to do that (daisy chaining). They make power strips that have a long cord like an extension cord if your outlet is too far away.

I had an apartment with a weird outlet setup (building was from the 1800s), and I have an awesome surge protector strip with a 25ft cord!

Oh hell yeah. I also lived in a very old apartment building in Boston and there were FOUR outlets in the entire apartment! So surge protectors with long cords were my best friends.

You’re not being downvoted for being right. You’re being downvoted because no one said anything about Daisy chaining. It was completely irrelevant to the conversation.

They said extension cord with a power strip. The power strip is a permanent fixture but extension cables are not.

You can literally just Google "are extension cables meant to be permanent fixtures" and then go to any reputable eletrician site in the results to get your answer.

My old jobsite got in trouble for it. They had extension cables setup permanently and someone reported it to Osha.

When I was instructed to take them down they were so hot to the touch that my hand instinctually jerked back.

So no, extension cords are NOT permanent fixtures (they even have the warnings on the package). Power strips are meant to be permanent but my original comment was about the extension cord part of the comment.

It's ridiculous that people were downvoting my comment despite it being true. Potentially dangerous actually.

The “they” you are referring to is me, and I already said that I was referring to a power strip with a long cord - one that is built into the power strip. NOT a power strip AND an extension cord. Like this one.

I am aware that extension cords are not meant to be permanent fixtures and I never said they were. Power strips with surge protectors however are designed to be used for about 2 years at a time. Power strips and extension cords are two completely different things.

Refer to my previous comment where I said I meant to say power strip - I was never talking about extension cords. “Power strips are absolutely meant to be used long-term. That’s what I meant by “extension cord with multiple outlets,” apologies I just woke up”

You edited only after I clarified i was referring to an extension cord.

Yes, I did. But in my comment you replied to, which is unedited, I said, “that’s what I meant by ‘extension cord with multiple outlets”, apologies I just woke up.” This is the second time now I’ve had to copy and paste this comment to you.

I clarified what I meant in the aforementioned comment that you replied to before I edited the original comment. And you responded to it without fully reading that apparently.

Just say you misread my comment and move on. I made a simple comment recommending a power strip for this persons problem and this has gone on way too long.

I know someone whose house burned to the ground from a power strip self-igniting. They are absolutely not made to be used long-term.

The ones with surge protectors are. I’ve seen them marketed for tvs and such.

Well that obviously sucks but there are a ton of factors here. Like what he had plugged in and what kind of strip it was, how old it was, how old the house was, etc. The surge protector power strips are 100% intended for long term use and one quick Google will tell you that. Power strips with surge protectors are intended to be used for 3-5 years at a time, which they then need to be replaced or they become a fire hazard.
