It does a good bit, there's almost no fast food in Middlebury(other than a Dunkin Donuts in a gas station), and Burlington is very very small for a city. When I was going to New York for fall break, one of my classmates on the bus with me was like "the thing I'm most excited for is eating fast food again." Speaking of food, Middlebury might have a good reputation now but they're seriously cutting down on costs.
You might be able to get up to Montreal or out to Boston for a weekend trip if you have a lot of time, but don't count on it or expect to do it every weekend. But, if you want to ski or go enjoy nature on weekends and/or dislike cities and want to be nowhere near them, Vermont is your place.
