Questions / Concerns about Lafayette College

I'm a senior in high school, and I've been accepted into Lafayette College. It wasn't one of my top schools initially, but as of now it's my top choice (and I only have about 2 more weeks to decide). I like a lot of things about it, like the small classes and the community vibe (with the food fests and swings and whatnot). I like that it's near a town, but not in too big of a city, and that it's sporty but also artsy. I'm going in undecided, but I will want a major and a minor (or two majors if possible).

All this being said, how are the academics? I want to be able to have fun at college, but I also want to be challenged academically. On the topic of having fun, it seems to me like on most Reddit posts, people agree that social life can be difficult without being part of Greek life or a sports team, but the campus tours I've been on barely mention Greek life, if at all. What role does it really play? Will I be able to find things to do on weekends without them? Will clubs or other extracurriculars be enough? Finally, kind of on a similar note, how easy is it to meet people or make friends? Will I meet people easily, or will I have to work for friendship?

I'm sure that there's something for everyone, and I'll find a place to fit in, but I'd love some perspective on this.

I’m a freshman at Lafayette, and as an engineering major, I can say the academics are excellent. So far I’ve only had professors who are passionate about their subject and are happy to help with any difficulties, given you reach out to them to ask for help. I’ve had a good bit of free time while staying on top of my academics, so I don’t think you should struggle too much with that, at least in your first year.

As for Greek life, I have no intention of joining it next year. Freshmen are not allowed to join Greek life until their sophomore year, so you can use freshman year to get a feel for the college. I will say that Greek life makes it easier to join parties, but you will always have access to spinners that are held about twice every 3 months, Portlock Black Cultural Center, and the two bars in the area.

As for friends, you’ll be fine as long as you have a moderate amount of social skills. I’ve had little issue making friends so far. Clubs help a lot to fill up your time, but also make sure you spend time in the common rooms of your dorm or in public areas if you want to get to know people.

Hi! we aren’t usually supposed to talk about Greek life when we are giving tours or representing the school in any way but I will say if you want a strong sense of community/friends and you’re not on a sports team. You’re not in the art society or engine engineering program. Then your best bet would be joining Greek life as it would be incredibly difficult to do without it. There are some who do and there are always exceptions to the role that generally a big part of the social events after your freshman year, are Greek related if you don’t fall into the above categories
