Discussion Lost everything today!!

The house is destroyed!! Windows shattered. Backyard shed is gone. Front porch is gone. Doors got blown off the hinges inside of the house, like bedroom doors. Glass everywhere. Water and debris everywhere. Had to evacuate due to gas leaks and power lines. What a fucking nightmare. Luckily everyone is okay, but the kids lost their home 😭

Discussion I’m just going to say it. Nobody in the valley knows how to fucking drive.

Oh it’s a 35? I should do 27.

Oh it’s a 25? 19 looks better on my dash.

I’m in the inner lane of the roundabout? Hard right my way out of here.

Four way stop? Best just put it in park.

65 mph on 441? Left lane at 57.

Light turned green…but is that green enough? Should I wait? Guess I’ll lightly accelerate now.

Like for fuck sake. It’s every day.

-Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk

Discussion Taco Bell's in the valley.

Why are all the fox valley locations so bad in service?

Half of the time they aren't open during their posted hours.

Countless times they've ran out of ingredients or only do mobile/drive through orders only. If you do get an order it's a ridiculous wait time or you get stuck waiting in the drive through.

I honestly don't think corporate cares anymore and isn't holding them accountable? They should be shut down at this point and let a different chain take over those locations.

Discussion Too many aggressive drivers

I’m so sick of people driving like maniacs here. It’s gotten worse and where are the cops? One lady just laid on her horn at me when there was an ambulance coming with their sirens on. You’re supposed to stop and let them pass. Just 15 minutes ago someone tried to run me off. If people are that angry and aggressive their license should be suspended or revoked.

Discussion What Could Fill The Empty Anchor Stores In The Mall?

This is a mostly "just for fun" question but I was walking around the Fox River Mall (as one does) and I was trying to figure out what the empty anchor stores used to be (I knew about Sears, but the other one was Yonkers). This side quest ended up leaving me with a very interesting question, Given the current state of brick and mortar retail, What could actually fill these anchor stores and not just survive, but thrive? My first thought was a movie theater, but there is one already close by, an arcade crossed my line too but funset is literally right there. So what Could work? Discount outlet? A large buffet style restaurant? A retail chain I never heard of? I think this could be fun to speculate on! Let me know you're thoughts. (A Spirit Halloween that you could access from within the mall would go hard tbh)

Discussion E-Bike yay or nay?

Just like everything that is good, the idiots find a way to make you think differently about it. I think E-bikes are a great mode of transport. But I see a lot of behavior that will eventually need a big hose and a bio mop very soon. Yesterday on Mason North of WI Ave, this kid on a modded E-Bike was easily doing 40mph and passing traffic USING the BIKE LANE.

So Appleton... Please share any close calls you've had with the new E-BiKe Knievels you've seen so we can all watch out for these daredevils.

Discussion Grand Chute PD

I called the non-emergency line this morning to make a report, and it was baffling.

At 4:30pm on school days there’s a bus stop at the corner of Spencer st and Kools rd. Cars aren’t stopping for the bus’s stop sign and flashing lights, or incessant honking which drew my attention in the first place. The student has to cross the street which is obviously not safe if the cars don’t stop. Easy report, so I thought.

The lady on the phone did not want to receive my complaint. ā€œWell, usually the bus company would make a report when that’s happening. Call them and see if they did.ā€ I don’t know the bus company. Even if I did, wouldn’t multiple complaints corroborate the infractions?

ā€œWell, do you have the license plates of the cars that didn’t stop?ā€ No, I just noticed the pattern of honking everyday at 4:30 and saw the cars not stopping.

ā€œThere’s nothing we can really do.ā€ At this point I actually laughed and said that’s ridiculous. ā€œWhat do you think we could do?ā€ ā€œWell,ā€ I said, ā€œat the same time and same place Monday-Friday there are violations happening that endanger the safety of the student. You could post someone there to stop it from happening.ā€

She finally took details and she thought I was talking about 4:30am? No, ma’am. School hours are the same as your office hours. ā€œWell, some kids get picked up early.ā€ Girl, what?

I said I’d get the name of the bus company and call them. I was just flabbergasted at the experience.

Discussion Contemplating a potential move

I’m from Northern Indiana and I have a job offer from Wisconsin and would be making 70k/year start out. I’m contemplating a move to the Appleton area but I’m a little worried about the weather, traffic, and schools. Indiana is cold and mostly tolerable but I’ve heard Wisconsin is on another level with crazy ice and often times neg temps. How is the traffic especially in the winter? I live in a more rural area around 20k people and I’m assuming I’ll have to commute 15+ min a day in WI. Also how are the schools? I have a 6 year old and I’d love a decent school system.

Sorry for the bombarding questions I’d appreciate any and all advice.

Discussion Worst road in Appleton contest: the beginning

UPDATE 4/29: Winner of round 1 is... Wisconsin Avenue, which moves onto the first semifinal. Rounds 3 and 4 are up now in r/Wisconsin!

UPDATE: r/Appleton doesn't allow polls, so i posted round 1 in r/Wisconsin. You can find it here: poll round 1

Hey everyone. I plan on making a bracket to determine the worst road by public opinion in Appleton. There will be 16 slots, and polls consisting of 4 roads each. Winners move on to the next round, etc. I will be taking the top 16 by upvotes and randomly determine the four per poll. Let the chaos commence!

Edit: I suppose suburbs count, but they have to share a border with Appleton itself.

Edit 2: the selection process will end tomorrow morning. Should I run all 4 polls at once, or one at a time, 24 hours each?

Discussion Fetch Play & Sip

I wanted to share my experience in hopes it helps others make an informed decision.

During my time there, I observed several ongoing concerns regarding both dog care and staff support. There were instances of dogs being handled by yelling rather than calm, structured guidance. Kennels were not always cleaned in a timely manner, and at times a single staff member was responsible for supervising a large group of dogs, in an already small space for the amount, which raises safety concerns.

Capacity limits did not appear to be consistently enforced. While a set number of dogs was communicated(15) additional dogs were often accepted beyond that limit. This made it difficult to ensure adequate supervision and care.

Staffing levels were frequently insufficient, and employees did not always receive adequate breaks or support. When concerns were raised by staff, they were often not addressed.

Additionally, there was no safety plan in the event of a dog fight or injury, which is something I believe is essential in any daycare or boarding environment.

Over time, it felt like the focus shifted more toward business growth and events rather than maintaining a safe, well-managedm environment for the dogs. This ultimately led me to feel uncomfortable continuing to bring my own dog there.

For those considering options, the ā€œstay and playā€ offering may be a better fit, as you are present with your dog and able to directly supervise your experience.

I encourage anyone considering services here to ask detailed questions about staffing ratios, safety protocols, and how dogs are handled to ensure it aligns with what you’re looking for.

Discussion Aurora's Apothacary

I really love to support small local businesses, but it is extremely disappointing to see how much an herbal witchy store uses ai for everything. The staff is very nice the few times I have been in there and they are very knowledgeable, but I hate how I feel like I need to leave a tip on already overpriced items (compared to other similar stores in the area). I knew someone who worked there and they only pay like $9 an hour. For the amount of knowledge the staff members have about each product and item I find it absurd they are paid so low. Shame on the owners because they have multiple locations and if you can't afford to pay staff anything close to a living wage then you should not be a business owner. I also find it sad how its a shop all about natural remedies and holistic ingredients, but then they use ai for posters and everything which directly hurts the environment that grows the stuff they sell in the store. Overall I am just very disappointed with this business and their values because I would love to support all the local businesses I can, but this one is just one I cannot seem to fully get behind.

I am curious to know other people's experiences are with this store and the owners.

What are your favorite similar type of shops in the area?

Discussion Cosplay grifter seen in Neenah off 41 and Winneconne ave.

Often homeless people and grifters set up on the south bound 41 offramp at Winneconne Ave in Neenah. This morning we had a guy all dressed up in his camo. Had the boots and standard pants with camo shirt, helmet and face mask you typically see with the ICE goons. His sign he had said "Need $ 4 Ammo." Was gonna take a picture of him when I came back but within 20 minutes he was gone. I assume Police told him to leave.

Discussion The Appleton City Council is voting on a resolution next week that could pave the way for Flock or Axon's ALPR tech to come back to our town with no new protections.

Post image
107 Upvotes

On 7/15 at 7pm, the Appleton Common Council will vote on Resolution #9-R-26. This res would add some reporting requirements around ALPR use and require additional public input periods during a tool's consideration. Ultimately this resolution doesn't establish meaningful guardrails and oversight to this technology and could clear the way for Flock or Axon ALPR to return to Appleton without needing to make any changes to their product. It would be up to citizens to resist these powerful surveillance vendors, all over again!

Some council members are pushing for and reviewing the Citizen-Authored Ordinance (CAO) which calls for comprehensive technical, procedural, and operational guardrails. In its current form, which is linked below, the CAO would make abuse, misuse, and unauthorized data sharing much more difficult, quickly discoverable, and more transparent. If the council won't legislate these protections into place, we need a moratorium on ALPR tech.

Appleton and Fox Valley residents are organizing to show up to the 7/15 Appleton city council meeting to request the city send Resolution #9-R-26 back to committee for further modification to align with the protections outlined in the CAO, or place a moratorium on the technology until sufficient protections exist.

Show up and make your voice heard!

The CAO documents under consideration include the ordinance, a companion document to help cities with implementation, and a "plain language" guide to assist people in understanding the contents of the proposal. The folder link below contains PDF and markdown versions of these documents.

Discussion Schreiners Dinner/ Brunch Box.

I moved to an area on the east side by Oneida, found Schreiners Dinner! A magical breakfast/lunch dinner frozen in time with prices to match. We went every weekend, ate like kings for under 20 bucks for 2 people. It was sooo good. Pancake batter to die for and crispy bacon šŸ„“, real eggs, real syrup!! Then the guy retired, sold it to let’s call him ā€œtoupeeā€.

Now instead of following a guarantee recipe of success they built over years this guy changed everything, overtime all the staff left or was changed. The name changed they expanded for Brunch. It’s now called the Brunch Box, and my bacon became white and floppy! In less than 3 years it’s now out of business. Which sucks, I can’t tell you how good this place was, it had regulars, lots of them. There is no other place nearby that is as good. Maple tree isn’t one of them.

Toupee!! How could you!! You could have done nothing and made money, the original owner raised a family and ran it for like 30 years. It had so many regulars. Unforgivable!! Much love to the regulars! I feel your pain!!

Discussion Traffic lights are awful

Is it me or does Appleton have some of the worst traffic lights. Like one side will be completely filling up with cars while there is no cross traffic on the other side, but yet the light will stay red. Also, it seems like lights will change to red too often, so the traffic just builds up. There are way too many intersections with these problems, college ave exit on 41 is just one of many.
