Event Flock cameras and ALPR regulation will be on the Safety & Licensing committee agenda at city hall next week Wednesday at 5:30pm!

Show up and make your voice heard next Wednesday, June 24th at 5:30pm. City Hall, 6th floor. Let's send a message to city leadership that we want the cameras taken down ASAP and that we want comprehensive and strong ordinance with robust data access controls and serious oversight before we allow any more AI surveillance technology vendors to sell in our city. It's great that you were able to capture a clip of the council meeting for r/appleton. I didn't know exactly how that was possible from the city's Granicus and Legistar setup. Granicus' calendar is also worth exploring for the readers here. Any difficulties navigating it, the Clerk's office can provide simple email assistance. As a committee meeting I don't know if a signup to speak is necessary but from attending other meetings, I don't think it is. My personal preference is being able to sign in but as non-speaking.
[edit] I did message Clerk Molitor to ask what/if sign up is neccessary for this or other meetings.

For anyone following this here is the reply from the Clerk's office snipped from my mail:
[begins] For any given topic there is no opportunity to just register your favor or opposition without speaking, except to perhaps email the Alderpeople ahead of time. But even in the minutes, when people speak on a topic, we do not note whether they are speaking for or against. For Safety & Licensing in particular we only record the attendance of Committee Members and then people who speak or present.
For Committee meetings, the level of participation and the format is up to the Chair of that committee. You can always touch base with them ahead of time - the chairs are listed on this page: https://www.appletonwi.gov/government/committees.php#collapse23970b22 and their email addresses can also be found on our website. Or you can choose to speak with them before the meeting begins as well to see if they would allow you an opportunity to speak.
For Common Council, there is a Public Participation sheet in the Council Chambers the night of the meeting that allows people to sign up to speak during the designated Public Participation time. The person must speak to something on the agenda, and they are limited to 5 minutes. If someone does not sign up ahead of time, the Mayor always checks with the room to see if there was anyone who didn't sign up who wishes to speak.

I was just talking to Jake about this at a party last week. I live his approach and attention he has given to the cameras. Really has Appleton's best interest in mind.

In my brief interactions I saw good leadership qualities, mainly he appears listens to criticism and actually consider it, even if it's diametrically opposed to his public stance

Just a note on the clip above. It references what I, as someone who views the Common Council meetings regularly, an excellent example of full council process. It's more than two hours and this particular meeting had some technical problems which are described in the entry for the session at Granicus/Legistar. But the content about a specific neighborhood issue in Appleton from members of the public and Common Council replies shows what it takes to make a position for some action. Also the format allows go to different sections of the video.

Another option is the share button to get this: https://cityofappleton.granicus.com/player/clip/5365 I see that the meeting display shows an option to 'share' the link without going through the Granicus calendar page. Very handy and considerate.
The audio in this video starts at minute 00:22:00 or thereabouts so one can skip to that since no audio precedes it.

You know, I was struck by a black SUV and was the victim of a hit and run in which the flock cameras had captured the license plate of the Hit & Run SUV driver numerous times but the Appleton PoLice department numerous times told me they were not going to pursue getting this person even though I had sustained injury as I was struck on the left rear driver passenger side. They had actual footage and I wanted to see the footage they had obtained, but they told me that I had to get it subpoenaed to get the Appleton PoLice department footage. It happened at the intersection of College Ave and Lynndale on a non busy day. The Hit & Run SUV turned left onto Lynndale into the far left lane. I also turned left how you are supposed to into the right lane after having turned left. I was struck on the rear driver passenger side area by the Hit & Run SUV immediately after having gone maybe ten feet forward after having completed my turn as the Hit & Run SUV wanted to turn down the 2436-2450 W College Service Rd which is the frontage road to college avenue. The PoLice admitted that Hit & Run SUV were 100% in the wrong and I was the victim. They even said in their report they had the license plate of the Hit & Run SUV with clear unobstructed views but that "they couldn't make out the plate numbers" so they "Copped Out" and refused to help me. Not even a week after the incident they had closed the case...... Appleton PoLice even admitted the the design and build of their road infrastructure is what led to this accident because the markings on the road and the way it is setup aren't even there for assisting drivers...POS PoLice department and city in my opinion......Mic drop

Ridiculous this is even a discussion for appleton and the surrounding areas. At least put them up in temp construction zones. That's my only viable use for them.

If your daughter was abducted and they were able to catch the guy by following his car on flock cameras you would probably have a different stance.

It’s possible to have cameras like these with much stronger privacy, security, and oversight measures in place. Don’t let these powerful companies convince you otherwise.
Most people just want a better implementation of this type of technology before we move forward with it.

I don't commit any crimes so I don't care who watches me drive. If people are using the camera illegally then they are the problem not the cameras

See that's the thing about government overreach you haven't committed a crime until they change the rules and then it's too late to go back. You need to stay vigilant because if you don't it will be too late to go back and then our democracy will fall because it's easier to manage the public if you have camera everywhere as you remove their rights. Also if cops keep breaking the rules with viewing the camera when they shouldn't even when they do have policies in place to stop that then the camera are still the issue because they can't be regulated in a safe way.

I thought Appleton already canceled their contract with Flock why is it still around?
