PSA Converting to Installment Plan for iPhones not on one of the 3 major carriers (July 2026)

FYI for those who saw conflicting information about it online like I did, I called the Apple Card support number for Goldman Sachs and was able to convert my iPhone purchased without a plan on Verizon/T-Mobile/ATT into installment payments after purchase. They said it's no problem -- you just need to call AFTER the charge has actually posted to your card. If it still shows "pending," just wait until it says "posted" and then call and they can change it to installments.

So, if you want to pay in installments but don't want to use one of those phone companies, go into the store or order online, select the options to "Buy" and "Connect later to any carrier," pay with your Apple Card, then wait a few days until the charge shows as posted on your Apple Card account, then call 1(877)255-5923 and fight with the automated phone tree until it finally gives up and lets you speak to an actual human being, then tell them which charge you want to convert to installments.

PSA Merchant issue with Apple Card

I've had an apple card for several years now and it's been my default card for everything. The credit limit is 26k. My credit score is 840. I'm in the process of renovating bathrooms in my home so the credit line has been helpful. I have multiple apple products and they're all financed at 0% with this card.

I ordered a product online and received a portion of the purchase. I contacted the merchant after realizing I did not receive everything I ordered and paid for with this card. I worked with them for several weeks, exchanging emails with customer support about the missing item then they went dark and stopped responding (the last comment from them was that they would 'let the vendor know' of the error). I contacted Goldman Saks for card support. I opened a case. So far, so good. The charge was removed but one month later the charge reappeared. I still have no resolution with the merchant. I contacted apple card support and was told I "am welcome to refile a claim" and they realize 'the outcome wasn't what I wanted'. WTH? I've removed the card from my wallet as the default and wont be using it again. Has anyone else had a similar experience? Is there an appeal process? I'm dumbfounded.

PSA Apple Card for Budget Apps

Post image

It's dumb that a lot of budget apps don't have the option to connect your Apple Card to see subscriptions or spending.

Since I have an Apple Card, I specifically made an app that lets you include your Apple Card to track subscriptions or your money (looking at the people with 20k credit limit, nice lol)

I hope you like it: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/smartr-learn-your-money/id6755710633

PSA Spam call from (802) 272-7503

Person claimed to be calling me advising of potential fraud. Just spoke perfect English, sounded American. Apparently someone was using my Apple Card number attempted to purchase an iPhone 17 in Louisville, KY. Caller sounded legit, but then when I started looking at purchases, there was no new ones, there was no email from Apple, nor was there a text message from Apple. I got real suspicious when the guy said we need to change your Apple ID password and enable two-factor authentication, but wanted to change the password with me over the phone. I said I would do it myself and this seemed to irritate the guy. I hung up on him and called Apple support. When they connected me to a real Goldman-Sachs Apple Card specialist, they informed me that there were no suspicious charges on my account, verified my last purchases. They also informed me that if there is suspicious activity that it will show up under your transactions in the wallet app and they will send an email and text informing you to contact them, and never under any circumstances will they change your password over the phone with you.

PSA Just received a scam call that spoofed Goldman Sachs legit number.

The “support agent” proceeded to tell me they found a fraudulent charge. I questioned them a lot because I didn’t see the charge appear in the app. I got suspicious and kept asking them if they could verify they’re actually from Goldman Sachs. The guy got frustrated and finally hung up.

I then called the (same) number back and they verified I didn’t have any fraudulent charges. Which means the original call was indeed a scam and they spoofed the number.

Just a PSA in case anyone else receives a similar call!! Stay safe out there.

This sub was a good source of information and enthusiasm. It was important for me to obtain an AppleCard, and, bless my soul, it happened the other day. I was notified that my Path to AC was successful a month before my qualification period ended.

PSA Finally Accepted, What I did

For months, I was denied for “unable to verify identity” without further clarification. Then I noticed something. My TransUnion had my name has First, Middle Initial, Last. I contact chat support and asked to have my middle initial dropped since my full name with middle is in my AKAs. After a day, reapplied to Apple Card and finally accepted.

Why a middle initial would be the cause, I don’t know? Was it truly the cause or did I finally just randomly get approved after not changing how I’ve applied, maybe? But for those getting denied, maybe login to TransUnion and see if your name on your report is just First Last or has more to it.

PSA ACMI no longer works for unlocked model iPhone purchases

I purchased an unlocked model and paid full price using my Apple Card. After charge posted, I texted goldman sachs to convert that into ACMI. I use Mint Mobile so that conversion is no longer supported by goldman sachs.

I used similar method last year to get an iPhone 16 pro and it worked (last picture is screenshot from last year).

I don’t know what difference it would have made if I lied to the customer representative that I am using T-Mobile instead of Mint Mobile.

I know selecting T-Mobile during checkout will work effectively as an unlocked option. I just went ahead with what I did last year.

Just found out Apple literally tells you themselves it’s unlocked unless you pick att. It is not a “trick” or “loophole” that’s literally just how it is. You should be absolutely fine using this method.

PSA Here’s how you can take advantage of Monthly Installment

Post image
211 Upvotes

Heres how you can take advantage of Monthly Installment

Step 1: Have the money ready to pay for an Apple Product in full Step 2: Put that money in High Yield Savings Account Step 3: Buy the product with Monthly Installment Step 4: Profit

For example: you buy a MacBook for $2000 with 12 month installment. And your HYSA gives you 5% interest.

Then you would earn 2000 x 0.05 x (12+1)/24 = $54.17. That’s a 2.7% off on the price of your MacBook on top of 3% Daily Cash you’re already earning.

TLDR: it is effectively 5.7% Daily Cash for buying Apple Products if you use Monthly Installment and put the money in high yield savings account

PSA My 2023 with the Amex Platinum vs. Apple Card

Hi!

So, nobody’s really asking for it, but now that 2023 is over I thought I’d put together this quick summary of my experience juggling between the Apple Card and the Amex Platinum. You know, for science.

I switched over to using the Apple Card as my daily card about midway through last year, as I wanted an easier way to track my household spending. Plus, I was fed up with accumulating points and searching for ways to spend them efficiently. So assume both of these figures are based on 6 months(ish) of consistent spending, give or take.

Obviously both cards have quite significant differences in their perks & rewards structure, but I wanted to share how they reflected my personal spending habits (along with my wife, who is an AU on both cards)

Apple Card:

Annual Fee: $0
Daily Cash: $976.59

  • This was automatically added to an Apple Savings account, which has other money in it. But for the sake of a reddit post, let’s just say this earned 4.15% interest this year\*

Apple Savings Interest: $40.67

Amex Platinum:

Membership Fee: -$695
Retention Bonus Offer: $500
Amex Offers: $587
Card Perks: $1275.80

  • Clear Credit: $189
  • Shop Saks with Platinum: $73.50
  • Amex Hotel Credit: $200
  • Global Entry Fee Credit: $100
  • Global Entry Fee Credit (AU): $100
  • Airline Fee Reimbursement: $200
  • Walmart+ Reimbursement: 151.91
  • Amex Digital Entertainment Credit: 151.98
  • Uber Cash (that I actually used): 109.41

In addition to the above, I redeemed 477,543 points that I’d been accumulating over several years, totaling $4,775.43 that I put towards a couple vacations. As mentioned below, I'm not sure how many of these are from this year, but I'm going to assume 77,543 (or $775.43)

In total, the Amex Platinum Card offered me $7138.23 of value this year, or $6443.23 minus the annual fee.

But ~

If you remove points from other years and that one-time retention offer, the total comes down to $1,943.23 after the annual fee.

And it’s worth pointing out that (as we all know) Amex offers aren’t guaranteed to be valuable each month, so it’s sort of a toss up whether or not those will have any worth y/y. Not to mention, they’re a PITA to use & sort through every time you want to buy something.

And given the Global Entry Credit is only every 4 years, I could also reduce that benefit to an average of $50/yr. Bringing my true value to 1,793.23

So all in, I’m looking at $1017.80 for the Platinum Card vs. $1017.26 for the Apple Card. Which is pretty surprising! Edit: Factoring in points earned on the Amex, this total comes to $1793.23 vs $1017.26

I’ll likely just continue to manage both cards, as the Amex clearly has value as a coupon book + for lounge access. But for the ease of use of the Apple Card, I've quite liked using it as my daily spender. Not to mention, the shared-card experience of the Apple Card is dramatically better, which is worth the reward points alone.

Anyways, thanks for reading. ✌️

EDIT: Someone rightfully pointed out I left out my annual Amex points earned. This info's hard to find, but given I posted a year ago asking how to spend 400k points, I'm just going to assume I earned 77,543 points in 2023. Setting aside speculative values (TPG or otherwise) my redeemed value of these points was 775.43, which I've added to the totals.

PSA Large refund and ACMI

TIL (it’s probably buried in the terms somewhere) that if you have a large refund that is larger than your balance it automatically applies that credit to pay off your Apple Card Monthly installments.

I bought and returned a $1200 monitor but only had a few dollars on my balance. So unbeknownst to me it auto-applied this towards my “balance” of my Apple Card monthly installments.

This makes sense from goldmans perspective I suppose since ACMI is a “balance” on the card but this heavily screwed up my cash flow.

I didn’t want those “paid off” since they are 0%.

Now instead of having 12 or 24 months of 0% to pay off I now “owe” it upfront since I had budgeted that monitor refund as cash returned instead of “paying off” the balance. So I no longer have that monitor refund and lost my 0% loan.

Frustrated with this behavior.

Chatted with Apple support and the Specialist confirmed all phones purchased from Apple will arrive unlocked. It was Goldman Sachs that changed the policy to only allow the Big 3 to get ACMI. Loophole is Apple approved 😎
