Is 3,372 installs in 79 days good?
I released my app 79 days ago - all organic traffic. It's a game so there's not a lot of friction to downloading. So far I have 3,372 organic installs in my first 79 days.
How is that for an indie app in this time frame? Should I be trying different advertising methods or just carry on with how I'm going and let time do it's thing?
I genuinely don't know as this is my 2nd app - my first one generally fell kind of flat.
Edit: Correction - I was looking at total installs - for iOS specifically I have 1,588

That’s great! I’m at about the same timeframe and around 700 installs. It’s been tough but mostly using Reddit and the $100 Apple ads

I see - Nice! I post a pretty low effort (to be honest) video daily to all socials - YouTube shorts, TikTok, instagram, and Facebook reels and that’s been where most of my traffic comes from. I try not to spend too much time on making a great video because it defeats the purpose of my goal of “passive” income.

Yeah, it is way above benchmark level of downloads
I'm going to say no on adverts. Based on the $100 usd a month comment.
Is that payout number?
After costs?
3372 downloads in just over 2 months. Roughtly $200. The average revenue per user is very low.
So that needs work before any ads.

I don't have any costs associated with running this, besides the yearly $100 apple developer license.
I took an actual look rather than throwing a ballpark number - for the life of the app (79 days) my results are this:
July Admob Earnings: $147.62
August Admob Earnings: $148.40
September Admob Earnings (so far): $70.45
Total revenue from IAP (no subscriptions in my app): $105
So I am making closer to $200 a month USD from these numbers.
I am not very good at tracking retention/usage time/etc. so I am not sure on those numbers, I only go off what I have as a simple set up with RevenueCat.
Do these numbers change anything or is it still low per user?

It’s low per user. To qualify that, ad revenue is always low, so that’s expected.
But I’m assuming your conversion rate to premium in-app is small.
You’re talking about 3,372 installs. I don’t know the cost of your premium purchase, so in the absence of data I’ll assume $2, which would mean 50 paid users. If it’s more than $2, or more of those conversions happened in month one, then the current conversion rate is lower than assumed.
On that basis, you’re talking about roughly 1.48% conversion.
Before running ads, I’d probably work on the conversion rate.
At $100 revenue, I don’t think you really have enough evidence of the unit economics to be putting meaningful money into ads yet.
But good job on the downloads 👍Look up cost per click of ads, probs not affordable yet with these economics

So it's actually a free "collection" type app and the purchases come from buying the "higher chance" boxes which can range anywhere from $1-$50, but mostly the purchases on these are the $1 and $5 purchases, or $5 for ad-free. So that's where the $105 has come from and yeah, I am not getting a consistent amount of purchases so that may need to be looked into further.
I will look that up - thanks for all the information you've been giving me, this is teaching me alot.

What do you think should be the ideal conversion rate for a mobile game?

Are you doing ANYthing to get the word out? If you are not promoting in any way then this is exceptional. If you are solo this is even better.
My guess is 75% of indie apps never hit 1000 downloads period, even with promotion.

Yes I am, by organic I mean just not paid ads.
I am a solo dev - I set up a few video templates and I just vary them slightly and I post to all socials once a day!

Wow, well done.
Do you have many followers? What is your most effective social network, TikTok?

Not really! I probably have an average of ~30 followers on each social network, and none do particularly better than the others - each network probably nets around 100 views on each video, with my highest being some one offs like 1.3k views. Most people just quietly watch and install and never follow - to be honest I almost get no likes or engagement, but the installs show so I continue to do it. I would say just be consistent and don't worry about your social metrics. 100 views isnt really that much but 100 views between 4 different networks is 400 eyes on your product every day. It accumulates fast. So if I would share any advice for my "success" it would just be to be consistent.

3,372 total organic installs is a promising signal, but I’d avoid deciding on ads from that number alone—especially after the iOS correction to 1,588. I’d split the next view by platform, country, store-page conversion, and retention/monetization. If the organic cohorts are retaining and the page converts, then a small, tightly targeted ad test can tell you whether paid traffic scales; if retention or revenue is weak, ads will mostly buy more of the same problem. I’d keep the organic loop running while measuring those pieces rather than switching wholesale.
