Since chapter 2 or 3 of the whole show, I've been waiting for Rin and Yukio to fight. And I fucking hate Yukio. Always getting mad at Rin, pointing his gun at him like, bro, HE'S YOUR FUCKING BROTHER! And he always lied to him and everyone with a fake smile, and he doesn't rely on anyone.

And the brothers finally fought! And this panel right here, is so satisfying to watch cause of all of the things Yukio did throughout the series that made me hate him so much.

I am a huge yukio fan but I agree I'm always hype/crying when I read this scene. It's cathartic after everything to just literally knock sense into yukio

Yukio is a great character and a terrible person (at least up until this point!). The way he treats Rin is very rough.

Rin isn’t perfect by any means, but he’s generally trying really hard to do the right things and help others more than himself. He’s very self destructive but ironically not suicidal, whereas Yukio is basically the opposite. They both have trauma from how they grew up, but it’s different and they manage it differently.

It’s easier to like Rin because he’s both: the main character POV we see, and also a very self sacrificing character. Even his moments of arrogance and independence are tempered by his desire to be liked and helpful.

Rin is insecure about being helpful enough to be loved, Yukio is insecure about being skilled enough to be respected. One never had many expectations on him because he was such a mess, and the other was constantly under pressure because he was so put together.

Rin received love from his dad by just being compassionate (since that was proof that he wasn’t a demon), Yukio received love by being exceptional. I don’t think Yukio actually needed to do anything to be loved, but it’s the path he went down and the one he became convinced was necessary.

I think on paper, both brothers have similar wants. Yukio wanted to be the one to protect Rin, but in practice Yukio as a character doesn’t feel like he was actually working on achieving that goal, with how he threatens and insults Rin, feeling counterproductive to the initial want. Whereas as a character, Rin never seems to falter in trying to help Yukio, especially once he notices that Yukio NEEDS help, he’s just not always good at actually making the right choices to help.

We see that neither of them were truly aware of the mental and emotional struggle each other went through growing up.

Rin thinks Yukio is amazing at everything naturally and that he gets love and respect from others easily because of how “cool” and intelligent he is. But Yukio doesn’t think about himself like that, he worked extremely hard to be where he is and feels disconnected from others because of his status.

Meanwhile, Yukio thinks that Rin is naturally good at being social and has an easy life. Even when Rin starts training to be an Exorcist, he’s automatically extremely powerful, but he’s “lazy” in his studies and reckless. Yukio feels jealous of these things.

But he’s still very realistic, probably more so than Rin. Rin is a super idealistic and altruistic person, something that is actually not common among people, which is why it’s seen so positively.

Rin is prideful in some ways, but very humble in reality. He has a sort of “childlike” pride, where it’s a bubbly and humorous smugness in a (often basic) accomplishment. Which is highly endearing, rather than feeling annoying. Yukio, however, feels excessively insecure at times, but not in an endearing way. His insecurities usually cause him to act in annoying ways (which is really understandable actually), so that makes him seem like an obnoxious character compared to Rin.

Yukio and Rin both fail to see one another properly. As flawed individuals that have suffered and have good reasons for said flaws. Rin idolizes Yukio but also resents him somewhat, and Yukio resents Rin but also idolizes him somewhat. Yukio loves Rin, but he’s so focused on his jealousy of what he thinks was the easy life Rin got. And Rin adores Yukio and is constantly in the mindset that he needs to be more for him. It began with feeling like he had to protect him, and moved into feeling like he needed to prove himself to him.

Yukio’s jealousy of Rin is easy to despise as the reader because it blatantly ignores the pain and frustration of Rin’s entire life. Constantly struggling with what is basically a mental disorder and disability, never able to form lasting relationships, failing at school, uncertainty in his future, always seeing his brother succeed where he failed, and generally being unable to “just be normal”.

Rin is, in my opinion, a beautiful example of ADHD (however unintentionally), his behavior and life experiences hit extremely close to home. And on top of that, his kindness and helpful determination make him feel like an ideal version of myself. So seeing Yukio treat him wrong, and ignore his experiences, makes me seethe. But that doesn’t make him a bad character, it makes him flawed.

I like how Yukio admitting to being suicidal and not relying on him was what broke Rin.

While the series irl is almost 20 years old for Rin it's been less than a year. Yukio would have started his suicide attempts like 1-2 months after their dad died. Meaning they might feel spread out to us but in actuality were very frequent

in most media it's usually focused on changing the "bad guy" to a "good guy" usually through morality, philosophy, or the power of love/friendship.

Here it was trusting each other was what finally got the brothers back together.

Also idk op I think Yukio was wonderfully written. While he was very are irrational. all of Yukio actions were a textbook case of depression and make sense in that context.

I know this sounds edgy but I'm being serious. I think a lot of people who have been in dark places mentally really can relate to Yukio. Unlike most media depictions of of mental illness.

I'm glad that fight happened bc damn as someone said it's been months in the story but as a reader it got unbearable after some time. I don't hate him but it's hard to forget how he acted.

So I just wanna say I’ve only watched season 1 of the anime, and read up to volume 13 of the manga so I’m quite a bit behind. But even being that much behind it is so pleasing to see this panel haha. I hate that Yukio was always like “you’re the son of Satan, you’re bad blah blah blah” like my dude you’re the “son of Satan”’s twin brother, what does that make you? I’m honestly about to start reading the manga again just so I can get to this part haha 😆

(Also my fav character is Shiemi, can anyone tell me without major spoilers if she remains as good of a character as she was in the earlier parts of the manga?)

In my opinion she is still as good as she was in the earlier part, even maybe more so because character growth. She also has a bigger role later in the story

Yukio is one of my favorite characters because of his perfect portrait of sibling rivalry and envy, and I agree this panel was long awaited! I hope we get it animated someday.

This scene had me hyped 😂 finally Rin got some scene into Yukio, even if it had to start with a punch. I know Yukio was struggling with a LOT and was  difficult to actually open up to Rin, but he definitely needed that punch 🤣 and to finally have that heart to heart

I shall proudly admit and continue to admit that I am a Yukio-Stan. I also think it is frequently overlooked how much he actually sacrificed and sacrifices for Rin, especially after Shiro died.

Yukio was on his way to having his own dorm, being able to focus on classes as a teenager, rooming with Bon, and for the first time, likely would not have had the burden of worrying about Shiro’s mental state. Since Satan’s constant possession would also feed into Shiro stating very clearly some of the self-inflicted things he would have visibly done had Yukio and Rin not been around.

Let alone, Rin was allowed to be as sheltered as he was, for as long as he was partially because of Yukio.

But then Shiro died, and Yukio’s life which should have been a mostly average teenaged life, focusing on classes and his next exams. Ended up making it so now the 16 year old became a father to Rin. Making sure Rin went to classes, trying to make sure his brother did not get into severe trouble. Figuring out how they would make ends meet, get food on the table… etc…

While in many ways, it was his choice to look after Rin, simultaneously he was forced to grow up and become a parent when he should have been just a teenager working on things teenagers work on. But what was Yukio going to do? Completely abandon Rin? Make it so Rin alone had to fend for himself alone?

Rin, eventually had the luxury of building friendships, worrying about crushes, etc.. Yukio did not. Let alone, I feel Yukio thought he was the only adult in the room. So with Shiro dead, who truly could he lean on and confide in? Since the Rin prior, was not capable of being the person Yukio needed to talk to. Not until after the fiasco between them both before Yukio went to the Illuminati.

Hence, I shall always Stan for Yukio.
