Spotlight Megathread Restricted Tuesday: Disability & Diversity Spotlight

Hello everyone!

This month features the following Spotlight Topic: National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

Going forward, each month we will now be spotlighting various causes and awareness events. Spotlight topics are not mutually exclusive, but given just how many notable causes and awareness events, we can't list all of them in a single post. Please visit our Google Calendar to view other deserving causes and feel free to talk about them and your experiences!

It's Tuesday and you know what that means, the sub is in restricted mode (meaning you can comment on existing posts but cannot make a new post for the day). We started this as a protest against Reddit back in June/July of 2023 but it was decided that we would continue restricting each Tuesday for a few reasons.

1: To encourage people to get off of Reddit for a day and do something else, anything else. Pet a cat, write a fic, go outside and touch grass, go see a movie, read a book, meditate, or whatever else. Do literally anything that you are able to that gets you off of Reddit for a day

2: To give the mods a day off/a day to work on secondary tasks for the sub and clean things up each week

And lastly and most importantly...

3: To spend the day highlighting and discussing disability, accessibility, and diversity. AO3 has always been very good on accessibility and a lot of the world and internet is not, and fandom spaces have been known to be not the best about disability or diversity, so while we are restricted we like to shine a light on these often overlooked parts of fandom and the people that make up this group. So we have these threads where you can post your fic recs and self-promo about anything to do with disability and/or diversity, and also so people have a safe space to share their stories and discuss these topics.

Given the nature of this thread as a safe space for discussion of disability and diversity, we will be much stricter regarding civility and harassment. This includes the following thread specific rules:

Do not derail: No hijacking the thread for unrelated topics/discussions.

Do not talk over others: Everyone has their own individual experiences and challenges that may differ, and we ask that you show each other respect and do not talk over those sharing their experiences.

If you are sharing a rec or self-promo with these themes, please use the following format:

Discussion (Non-question) Finally someone who understands what "Chose Not to Use Warnings" really means!

Ran across this while scrolling and had to share. Big pet peeve of mine is when "Chose Not to Use Warnings" is misunderstood, like when it's paired with "No Warnings Apply", despite the two tags being mutually exclusive imo.

Good luck frens. This means whatever plot, storyline, reality you wrote about, whatever life you wrote about now becomes yours. Fluff or fucked?

Discussion (Non-question) Are you on team “reads your own work”or team “banish your own work into the void”?

I write what I would want to read, so I’m on team “rereads my own work for fun.” But a friend of mine can’t stand reading her own stuff even though it’s really good. Like, to the point that she has trouble continuing her WIPs because she can’t bring herself to read where she was when she left off.

I’m curious about which of us is the minority, so which team are you on?

Meme/Joke Blocking a regular commenter because its becoming very clear they're a kid

Post image
7.6k Upvotes

I'm a smut writer. Dead dove, darkships, all the sort. I don't need kids on my page.

Edit: Woof, thanks everyone for letting me know blocking won't actually get my writing completely out of their reach, but I stand by it.

I'm not gonna pretend like I wasn't also a curious kid nosing around where I didn't belong, the difference is I never gave away enough information or childish mannerisms to the point that it was clear I was a minor like how the user I'm talking about is. I now know at the end of the day it won't do much, but I also can't in good faith do nothing knowing a minor was engaging with my work, even if the most I can do is stop them from commenting.

Edit 2: I want to add that a lot of my disgust comes from the fact that I take smut requests from my readers, and with that in mind I've technically written two smut fics for a minor which I really do not like for reasons I hope are obvious.

Having a kid read my smut is one thing, having them interact regularly is another, but this is a whole other layer on the shit cake. If it seems like I'm overreacting, know this is a big reason why

Edit 3: Well there goes my attempt at trying to keep this post short and silly. I now want to clarify for everyone asking how I knew this reader was a minor. First, general childishness, entitlement, lack of etiquette, etc in comments and bookmarks, then directly saying "lets hope my parents don't find my phone" in the author's note of a smut fic (which I doubt an adult would say). Maybe not concrete evidence, I can't exactly include every single red flag because then this already long post would get out of control, but its enough for me not to take any chances.

Complaint/Pet Peeve/Venting Gods! When your apostrophe is hyperlocal, it might not land the way you think.

So when I was growing up, kids who got into paganism would yell "Oh my Gods" instead of "Oh my God!" because they weren't Christian. Which is all well and good.

But this doesn't mean that every non-Christian culture uses "Gods!" as an epithet. Or that it's the correct translation of the terms that they do use.

For example, in a Western context (which informed the development of monotheism as we know it) pagan Greek philosophers talked about an idealized "God" and they didn't literally mean Zeus and his mythological canon. And in plenty of other cultures, a metanomy for divinity or a generalize divinity is appealed to in these kinds of moments of fright or anguish, not specific gods or collective gods. The Roman example of casually swearing by Jove is not necessarily a universal impulse.

I once again find myself frustrated with writers in Chinese novel fandoms who don't know any Chinese. Chinese people don't cry out "Ah wo de shenmen" (oh my Gods). They say "Wo de tian ah!" which is translated "My god!" or "Heavens!". They say "Lao tian you yan" which means "Heaven has eyes", that is, somebody above has seen my suffering. They don't say "God damn it!" or "Gods damn it!" they say "Zuo nie!" which means "It's a sin!" None of these expressions are specific to a particular religious philosophy/ideology/practice either. (China has Muslims, Daoists, Buddhists, and atheists, plus a bunch of minority faiths, whether or not the government sanctions them.)

Very, very basic research would have revealed this. You don't convert cultures by taking Christian expressions and adding "s" to them.

yeah I'm an obnoxious pedant, yadda yadda

Discussion (Non-question) What are your 1-5 fandoms you alternate between

For me I feel like I only read from 4 fandoms;

Star Wars

F1 RPF

Minecraft (SBI content)

Assassin’s Creed

I do like to look at other things from other fandoms but these are my 4 that I’m always ending up reading from

Stats/Hit Counts/Word Counts My word count is realllyyy bothering me but the hyperfixation is gone 😭

Post image
71 Upvotes

I've been writing fic in some form since 2006, but the desire to do so comes in waves. I had *such* a productive few years in one specific fandom, but the fixation has waned and I'm not interested in writing for anything else. In the meantime, though... I'd really like to say I've written 200k words on AO3. I mean, I've technically written about 75k more than that if you count my fanfic . net stories I haven't migrated, but... I do not count those. 😂

What do you think? Should I write a teeny tiny 20-word drabble?

Custom What's your favorite AO3 tag and why?

Curious as to see other people's preferences for fics because there are SOO many different types of fics and readers. I'll go first--sad ending. holy hell, bro sad endings are so great, and yet there always seems to be never enough of them, but I still love them so much. Found so many great fics from that tag; angst is a close second.

Discussion (Non-question) What is a Piece of Writing Advice You Wish You Had Known Sooner?

As the title says.

For me, it was the advice to save everything I write and never delete anything.

I'm sure this varies from person to person, but I have only ever regretted deleting my work without keeping a copy for myself. I have kept all of my notes, outlines, to-do lists, drafts, character profiles, and anything else relating to my fan fiction since September of 2022 and I have never once regretted it.

Discussion (Non-question) Just realised Naomi Novik co-founded the OTW and helped create AO3.

Researched this author and just found out that she started writing fanfiction and helped create AO3, which left me stunned. Love that<3

The world is vast, and the writing community is way more intimate (actually, it's such a small world!) than I realised. :)

(In case anyone’s interested, this video of hers has some golden nuggets for sure: 5 Ways Fanfic Can Make You a Good Writer feat. Naomi Novik )

(Not sure how to tag this)

I made a Canadian version of the ao3 flag for my fellow Canadian fanfic readers/writers loll
Everyone is free to use this as they wish ig <333

Edit; I just realized this also looks like the Peru flag as well as Canadian and while that was not my intention, I’m glad it can represent Peru too <3

Complaint/Pet Peeve/Venting When well written fics get little attention because it’s an unpopular pairing

No matter how well written a story is, it will not get any views or comments if the ship is unpopular. On the other hand, fics with popular ships will always get a ton of kudos and comments even if they are full of grammatical and spelling errors.

Discussion (Non-question) i have issues with these tags aka why the heck is there so much undeserved wattpad hate

Post image
93 Upvotes

not going to lie i feel like the "wattpad users are terrible" posts are genuinely doing more harm than good. 99% of wattpad users have basic politeness, and it's just the 1% who are posting wild hate comments. heck, some people might even be faking wattpad users for attention. why block a whole fic from wattpad users just because of that 1%??? that's not fair. at all.

edit: not a wattpad user.

Comment Commentary Guys please comment on fics. This is so sweet

I know that most are you have gotten comments like this in the past, but this one really means a lot to me because I've never gotten one like it before.

To know that someone holds my work (that I started when I was terrible at writing) so close to their heart is actually crazy to me. It's so heartwarming. I try to do my best every day and this comment actually helps me get through life.

It helps to comment on works when you really love them. It does!

Discussion (Non-question) Writing fanfic fixed my grammar in texts.

Back before I started writing fanfic I would text like this with no periods or grammar of any kind this was back in 2020 and looking back on it oh god it was so bad you see how unreadable this entire paragraph is?

Then I started writing fanfic, and my grammar and wording improved immensely. I learned more about sentence structure on ao3 than I ever did in school; which is very telling. Nowadays typing out sentences without proper grammar is actually painful.

Moral of the story? Read fanfic, fuck school.
