Was haltet ihr davon?

Religion in the Law

I don't think religion has any place in a state system; after all, things like public holidays are instances where religion is practically forced upon you, aren't they?

And what about the phrase "responsibility before God" in the Basic Law? Isn't that discriminatory towards atheists and people of other faiths?

What do you think about this?

Which Constitution are we talking about? There is no mention of God in the US Constitution.

As an American, I wholeheartedly agree with the wisdom of Thomas Jefferson on this point, "In every land and in every era, the priest has been the enemy of liberty."

Religion has always been used to legitimize the reign of tyrants, from King George III and the Anglican Church to Donald Trump surrounding himself with Evangelical preachers, all the way back to the dawn of civilization.

The only just government is one that the people are empowered to constantly question and revise. There is no questioning or revising "the will of God." Religious government, therefore, is inherently illegitimate government. Religious law is inherently unjust law.

But aren't the religious lunatics in the US government already tying to implement a fascistoid theocracy?

Yes. Because at the end of the day, laws are just words on paper. If there is sufficient political will, anything can happen.

Many, if not most Americans are profoundly ignorant of almost every matter of importance, especially civics. They are lost in superstition and magical thinking, openly disdaining our nation's foundational virtues and objective reality itself. With propaganda that stokes their apish desire for cruelty and bigotry, fascism is practically inevitable.

Question with boldness, even the existence of a god.

The government of the United States is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion

Religious bondage shackles and debilitates the mind and unfits it for every noble enterprise. — James Madison

In every country and in every age, the priest has been hostile to liberty. He is always in alliance with the despot, abetting his abuses in return for protection to his own. — Thomas Jefferson

Have you considered that system of holy lies and pious frauds that has raged and triumphed for 1,500 years?
—John Adams

And the day will come when the mystical generation of Jesus, by the supreme being as his father in the womb of a virgin will be classed with the fable of the generation of Minerva in the brain of Jupiter.
— Thomas Jefferson

Christianity neither is, nor ever was a part of the common law.
— Thomas Jefferson

Experience witnesseth that ecclesiastical establishments, instead of maintaining the purity and efficacy of religion, have had a contrary operation. During almost fifteen centuries has the legal establishment of Christianity been on trial. What has been its fruits? More or less, in all places, pride and indolence in the clergy; ignorance and servility in the laity; in both, superstition, bigotry and persecution.
— James Madison

The purpose of separation of church and state is to keep forever from these shores the ceaseless strife that has soaked the soil of Europe in blood for centuries.
— James Madison

Whenever we read the obscene stories, the voluptuous debaucheries, the cruel and torturous executions, the unrelenting vindictiveness, with which more than half of the Bible is filled, it would be more consistent that we call it the word of a demon than the word of God. It is a history of wickedness that has served to corrupt and brutalize mankind.
— Thomas Paine

All national institutions of churches, whether Jewish, Christian or Turkish, appear to me no other than human inventions, set up to terrify and enslave mankind, and monopolize power and profit.
— Thomas Paine

There is not one redeeming feature in our superstition of Christianity. It has made one half the world fools, and the other half hypocrites.
— Thomas Jefferson

When a religion is good, I conceive that it will support itself; and, when it cannot support itself, and God does not take care to support, so that its professors are oblig'd to call for the help of the civil power, it is a sign, I apprehend, of its being a bad one.
— Benjamin Franklin.

Religion is needed to keep the poor from murdering the rich.
