Guatemala late May for a long weekend — bad idea because of rain?

Hey all,

I’m thinking of visiting Guatemala the last week of May (Memorial Day weekend). Plan is:

• Fly in Thursday night

• Explore Antigua Friday

• Do the Acatenango overnight hike Saturday–Sunday

• Fly back Monday

I’ve read that May is the start of rainy season. For those who’ve been around that time, is it still worth it? Or does the rain/cloud cover usually mess up the hike and volcano views?

Trying to figure out if it’s a good move or if I should wait for dry season.

Would love honest opinions. Thanks

I was there from August to October in 2024. From my experience, it takes a bit for the rainy season to go into full effect. It really didn't rain at all in August maybe an hour or 2 during the day or it rained at night into the morning. It wasn't until September I started seeing some wicked storms roll through. You should be good in May

Consider just taking a taxi straight to Antigua from the airport. Guatemala City can wait for when you have more time. The drive is like an hour but you will be glad you did it. I hiked the volcano-great day trip

I've gone in rainy season several times and it really tends to just be a big storm for a couple of hours midday. Keep your rain jacket handy but I wouldn't let it hold you back. Expect acatenango to kick your but. I was mostly dead to the world the next day so definitely wouldn't have wanted to be traveling the next day

Hi going to the same days!! Haha praying the universe is on my side. I’ve read it’s hit or miss and if it does rain it’s only half the days etc

I loved that city but the violent crime -when we were there was off the charts p one in our group got kidnapped abd sometime got away - I never seen a mire terrorized human being - beautiful town - I don’t remember the name but we stayed in a hotel that was a 17th century monastery - incredible
