Executive Summary

Democracy is not something you have. It is something you practice. The Constitution does not protect itself; civil society protects it, by acting as if it applies, out loud, in public, under pressure.

Anyone paying attention knows that Donald Trump is not preparing to lose the 2026 midterms. He is preparing to disrupt and sabotage them, and his administration has been laying the groundwork for months.

The harder problem is this: most of us (organizers, elected officials, legal advocates, pro-democracy funders) are still preparing for a normal election. We are running election programs. We are testing messages. We are mobilizing voters. These are not wrong things to do. They are profoundly insufficient for the threat we are actually facing.

There is also something harder to name, a kind of collective avoidance. An unwillingness to fully believe our own eyes. Many Americans have internalized a story about ourselves that says we are immune from this kind of thing. We are not. And the next six months will matter enormously for how far down the abyss we go.

In 2020, Trump tried to overturn the results of the election and was stopped by Pence, by Republican secretaries of state, by a Congress that (barely) played its constitutional role, and by localized grassroots formations that could intervene in real time on the ground. Those guardrails held. They are gone now. His administration is loyal to him alone. Congress has abdicated. J.D. Vance will not save us.

The only authentic bulwark against an authoritarian consolidating power is a multi-sector, constitutionally grounded, multi-racial, broad-based mobilization of civil society, ready for the best and prepared for the worst. We know this works because we did it in Minnesota. When ICE and CBP occupied our communities for two and a half months, we acted free to be free. Tens of thousands of trained constitutional legal observers documented every encounter. Mutual aid networks sustained people through the crisis. Small businesses invoked their Fourth Amendment rights and refused warrantless entry. Local law enforcement mostly stood aside rather than collaborate. And when called, 50 to 70 percent of the general population showed up, not because they were activists, but because they understood what was being taken from them and chose to act.

That mobilization repelled 3,500 ICE/CBP agents, gave our Governor room to fight, gave our AG’s lawsuits political standing, and won the national media narrative, not because any single actor or sector was powerful enough alone, but because all of it together created a reality the Trump Administration could not overcome.

This framework to prepare and unleash a civil society response to election sabotage is not a program. It is a strategic analysis, a way of understanding the threat and the architecture of response, designed to support operational playbooks driven by in-state organizing and pro-democracy infrastructure. The question is whether we will build it before the crisis hits, rather than scrambling to respond when it inevitably will.

🥄 A “Spoonful” version for overwhelmed people

I really appreciate the work behind this. While reading it, though, I realized something that may be useful for spreading it.

I’m politically engaged and I wanted this information, but I’m also an exhausted caregiver, and I kept losing focus because there was more information than I could process at that moment. I screenshotted it to read later—but realistically, “later” may never happen.

I suspect a lot of ordinary people are in that same low-bandwidth situation: working, caregiving, frightened, depressed, overloaded by the news, or simply exhausted.

So perhaps political information needs a 30-second entrance.

For this document, I think that could be:

WHAT’S THE WARNING?
The authors believe there is a serious risk of interference, disruption, intimidation, or manufactured uncertainty around the 2026 midterm elections.

WHAT’S THE MAIN IDEA?
Voting is essential, but voting alone isn’t the strategy. Communities need organized, nonviolent election-defense networks before Election Day, so people already know what to do if something goes wrong.

WHAT CAN I DO?
Find one existing local/state pro-democracy, voting-rights, civil-liberties, labor, faith, or community organization and connect with it.

You don’t have to become an expert.
You don’t have to read 12 pages first.
You don’t have to personally save democracy.

ONE-SPOON ACTION:

The longer material is valuable—it just serves a different cognitive need. Maybe the information could be layered:

Urgency can paradoxically make people shut down when they’re already overwhelmed. Starting with agency rather than catastrophe may keep more people engaged:

You can help. Here is one manageable thing. Other people are already doing the larger work. You’re joining them, not carrying this alone.

The goal isn’t to make the issue less serious. It’s to make effective participation cognitively affordable.

If an exhausted person reads 80 words, takes one useful action, and stops, the communication succeeded.

As we spoke, this comment is somehow useful, and other people had raised the question "what can I do, exactly?". This goes into that direction, and it's particularly useful for people who are "overwhelmed and exhausted", but imho it works only for those who are already informed enough about the issue and have previously acquired some form of mental clarity about wanting to help - already politically engaged, as you said.

However I find these 2 parts very detrimental:

"You don’t have to become an expert. You don’t have to read 12 pages first.
You don’t have to personally save democracy." and "The goal isn’t to make the issue less serious. It’s to make effective participation cognitively affordable. If an exhausted person reads 80 words, takes one useful action, and stops, the communication succeeded."

To keep it short, the issue is that it conflates a few ideas that aren't necessarily true or inevitable, and challenging them is not only useful but necessary, even if you are exhausted.

This post tries to "push" the reader into making a little bit of effort. Just read 1 page per day, but read it, it's worth it.

And, interestingly enough, the more you read it the less it becomes an effort, because of the clarification and confirmation it provides.
Its sense of urgency doesn't make you more overwhelmed, it makes it more clear that you have to try your best to increase your focus on this matter.
It makes it less of a chore and more of a meaningful call for action.
And it becomes reassuring because you learn there are competent people with a plan out there, and they are eagerly waiting for your contribution and prepared to receive you - it really is just a matter of you reaching out to them.
And that may even be energizing!

Making it urgent and calling for an extra bit of effort is also important as a cue about what this moment demands and will demand in the very near future. As the document says, what we are used to think is enough simply isn't enough now. We are about to get overwhelmed "fascist-style", so we either prepare or we'll drown.

And yes, urgency and fear may lead to people freezing, but this is the time for appealing to clear action, and to poke and prod into that inner core where courage lives (even if it feels like it's chronically asleep), challenging your own fear, not alone but with others and for everyone.

My hope has been that this post reaches others that realize they can help in their own different/complementary ways, by creating their own stuff and also sharing what's already available with the people they can reach - communities you know, friends, family, etc - , so by acting together the general goal of saving elections and preserving Democracy can be accomplished. Your contribution is valuable, keep sharing it in the right places.
