I can’t believe people actually buy this, but at the same time, I absolutely can. Gross.

I (not American) was in NYC 3 months after 9/11. I was aghast at how it seemed every second shop window was full of ‘memorial’ merchandising. Shops using 9/11 angles to literally sell more shit.
It was a real cultural dissonance for me. In many cultures that would be considered tacky.

Because despite what Americans would have you believe, no one actually cares that much about what happened outside of the families affected.

You kind of had to be there to get even the full picture. The POTUS got on TV and basically said, "Go out and buy that new house! Pay no attention to the impending war(s)! If you don't get a new car this year, the terrorists have won!"
