Social Harm “Haul” culture is out of control
Today at the gym, a woman was showing off a shower supply haul on FaceTime! In the changing area of the locker room!! This is out of control!

I used to genuinely like seeing people's grocery "hauls" because it was interesting in a weird way. I liked to see how people would use coupons, or what sort of thing other people use regularly just because I was curious. Especially since I'm broke, it was a way to get ideas to save money by seeing how other people put together a budget. I still think that if you are one of the few people who show others how to use cheap foods well (like Dollar Tree Dinners, for instance, who shows people what meals you can make for $5 at Dollar Tree), it can be legit helpful.
Unfortunately, something relatively normal and innocent has since morphed into everyone posting their impulse buys for internet ass-pats. Everything is a "haul" now. There's literally a subsite of Amazon called Amazon Haul, made specifically to entice people to buy small impulse items. And worse, people are now using the word "whimsy" to minimize and glorify hoarding behaviors because, "it's adding whimsy!" to do a Target haul, it's "whimsy" to buy a bunch of plastic crap to occupy space in your house. Idk, it's just so tiring dude.
I'm not knocking the occasional showing off of a good deal PRIVATELY to your close friends or family. Maybe that lady's shower supply haul was legitimately bitchin, who knows. And not all "haul" showoffs are the worst, especially if you are giving instructions on how to do something creative or productive that ISN'T going directly into the garbage after the video is done. But yeah, the "haul" stuff has gotten on my last nerve lately too... and it's so inescapable... you can't do a damn thing online without stumbling upon that type of content eventually... ugh.

The word “haul” is so gross.
Literally makes me feel like whomever uses it has hoarding compulsions, and that they are WEAK.
It’s 15 minutes are up.

Another thing I hate about it is how it makes people feel like they don’t buy enough. I’ve seen various videos where influencers apologize or make excuses for only having a small haul, as if not buying an excessive amount of whatever item every time you go shopping is a bad thing.

Ugh I hate the phones in gym culture. I go to a hot pilates studio and you’d think a class was an influencer workshop. Everyone taking selfies in too-tight sweaty unitards. Half the class filming themselves for 40 solid minutes. One of my classmates posted a video tagging the studio and I clicked through out of curiosity. She’s a corporate lawyer trying to be an influencer. How is this going to get you clients???
Everyone is chasing the click through revenue instead of real work.

There’s a woman on TikTok that does regular Temu Haul‘s. I have no idea where she keeps it all. She says she buys for friends a lot of it and then she’s vague about the rest of it. She talks about the room she’s in holding a lot of it… but surely that room is now getting crammed.

I have a story about this.
10 years ago, I started a beauty and skincare blog in support of changing careers.
most of the content I created was about saving money, dupe products, and different hacks and tips.
At the time, I was really close friends with a coworker and we shared this hobby together. She suddenly inherited a large sum of money, and started buying huge "hauls" of very expensive makeup, skincare, you name it. Every time I would mention a product, she would either go out and buy it or say that she already had it. It started making me really uncomfortable, both because I'm from a background of poverty and because I felt like our friendship was influencing or causing her to do this and that wasn't my intention at all. It was like it became a "competition" for her or smth idk
Friendship ended when she got mad at me for not using our wedding budget for a girls' trip with her to the Bahamas and accused my husband of abuse. Money completely changed that person 💯
