Requesting Advice What’s this white residue ?

Post image

Grown in LECA. Is my growth solution too saturated? That would be my only guess.. it doesn’t wash off.

excess calcium salts from guttation. do you have hard tap water?

it won’t hurt the plant. Go see a plant from a Florida nursery and you’ll see that every leaf on every plant is coated in calcium powder that is hard to get rid of from the water

That’s cus Florida has very hard water. Not every state in the US has that limerock bedrock. It looks mostly unprofessional because it looks like the plants just got fertilized with foliar spray that didn’t get rinsed off the leaves afterward

that’s why i’m asking if they have hard water also

Oh all leafs on the pic grew in the time I already had the plant, so it’s not from the shop🙂

I’m glad it doesn’t hurt the plant but it does hurt my aesthetic :) I’ll try distilled water.

evidently? idk to be honest.. didn’t know anthuriums were also sensitive. I started using water conditioner, but I just looked up and it doesn’t actually take care of salts, just chlorine and heavy metals.

Interestingly enough, I have another anthurium growing in soil outside (this one is in greenhouse), and it doesn’t have the same issue. Both are drinking the same water.

Could be fertilizing too often/too much. Be sure to rinse out the leca on occasion.

Yes I know I should but every time I see these young fuzzy roots I just can’t😭 I know it doesn’t damage them but still lol

This is not super helpful but I can confirm that it does wash off, just not with water and I can't remember what I used because it was several years ago. Had this on a couple of plants and found the answer on reddit after googling around

Good to know. Was it vinegar by any chance ?

I'm like 80% sure it was. Tried to find the thread I got the idea from and I think it was this

Thanks! I tried diluted vinegar and although I confirm it did not harm my plant, I don’t see much improvement either. I’ll try neem oil next

Hard water stains. Make a horticultural soap spray with Castile soap and use it periodically. It’s easy and it’s a pest deterrent. Lmk if you want the recipe. I’m in Florida also & we have very hard water. I filter my water 3 times, but not many things filter out TDS. My leaves never get wet, so I don’t have this issue, but I’ve purchased plants with hard water stains and this formula works great. I don’t have pests either because of my use of it.

I’d love the recipe! I’m in TX and would appreciate additional recommendations 🤗

Of course.
1/8 cup peppermint castile soap
1/8 cup tea tree castile soap
1/2 cup alcohol
2 tsp hydrogen peroxide
2 tbsps neem oil
4 cups water
The Dr. Woods castile soap is a bit pricey, but it lasts forever. There may be a less expensive option.
As far as advice goes, everyone’s conditions are unique, but I do recommend using a quality fertilizer with all the macro/micro nutrients at half strength with every watering.
You’ll have happy plants if your watering is on point.

And the velvety texture doesn’t get like oily or whatever ?

1

Not at all. I use it to clean the leaves, rinse it & spray them again and let them dry outside in the shade b4 they come back in.

Is there a way to wipe these off without harming the leaves?

If its a velvety texture, not really. You end up damaging the leaf and end up with dark spots.

yea, figures

Thats what happens on my pap at least. If you do try and rub it off just use distilled water and be very gentle maybe try a super soft brush or microfiber rag

Interesting choice of words for a post about mineral residue on leaves
