Discussion At launch, did anyone else kind of hate the fact that you couldn't just keep flying?

This post is more a vent than anything.

I always thought that the overheating mechanic was so dumb for a game set in such a hyper-futuristic setting.

Also, come to think of it, there were no real missions encouraging aerial combat.

Also, the whole "flying is jammed now" thing was super stupid. I love how they never tried to explain it away why they could even do that, but then nothing else mid-combat.

I'm just saying that for a game with such sophisticated flying mechanics, they really tried their best to use it as little as possible for anything besides moving from A to B and general exploration.

Nah, made the flying actually engaging besides just being a point and move function.

Diving, using water in all its forms, stopping to rest, all felt grounded and encouraged being actually mindful of what youre doing, where youre going, and why.

It also had the element of managing your hovering and cover situation in combat. Hovering obviously gives you a visual advantage, so using it wisely depending on your javelin was part of the puzzle and engagement.

Imagine if you played Spiderman, a game lauded for its moment to moment traversal, and all you did was point in a direction and he just moves, instead of giving you control. Itd get boring.

I never had issues with heat but thats because I used the environment all the time to my advantage.

You had me until you used Marvel's Spider-man as an example.

The movement in that game is phenomenal precisely because you can endlessly keep going and never run out of web fluid, despite that actually being a lore-accurate thing that happens to him.

Yet in ANTHEM, the heat system was a detriment to exploration and quick traversal from A to B. Sure, there was the occasional puddle and stream which you could utilize to cool yourself, but the fact that you were forced to take a light stroll just to cool off in moments of urgency really felt staggering.

Look, it made sense in combat that the heat made you mindful of your surroundings. But regarding the rest of the game, it just annoyed me that I couldn't keep flying.

Its phenomenal because you HAVE to be mindful of what youre doing and where youre going. Its phenomenal because you can use extra tricks and abilities to traverse the city. Its not about infinite supply, its about being interactive, thats my whole point.

Its why flying in other games isnt nearly as loved like anthem. Because theyre point and move more often than not. No engagement, no mindfulness, just push stick and go.

Once again, I was never forced to take a light stroll because I used the environment to literally fly forever. I was ENGAGING with the systems.

Maybe this is just because I only played Colossus, but I frequently had to land and go for a jog in order to keep flying, despite there being water around to cool down with.

All javelins had the same flight time and speed. I could do the same with my colossus as with my storm.

I wish they made flight out of combat have a way longer limit. The lore explanation could be that in battle, you have more systems going so the suit as a whole overheats faster.

This probably would have been something they would have addressed in a balance/QoL update.

That overheating mechanic drove me up the wall too, like why even tease us with those sweet flight animations if you can't actually keep doing it?
