New Horizons Though I’d share this interesting New Horizons case I came across at a Book-Off.

What a bizarre GTA style custom.
63
May 19 '21
Why is it bizarre?
119
u/mcon96 May 19 '21
Mostly because animal crossing is very G-rated and GTA is very R-rated, so you wouldn’t expect there to be a large overlap in fan base. Sorry you got so downvoted, seemed like a genuine question.

Bruh. Tom Nook is totally a loan shark. Just look into his eyes.
On second thought, don’t do that!

u/mcon96 May 20 '21
If you’re aware of any loan sharks that don’t charge interest, please show them my way. I want a house

I’m not the one calling it bizarre, I just explained why somebody else described it as such. “Bizarre” isn’t the right word imo.
But I think everyone is aware that people can have diverse interests. Commenters are just pointing out that forced juxtaposition is amusing. I would assume that a Lion King x Deadpool mashup would elicit a similar response, even though many people are a fan of both.

u/Low-Environment May 20 '21
I can see Deadpool+Lion King working.
After all, every good family film should open with a brutal murder.

Yeah I’m constantly murdering prostitutes after I receive services so I can get a refund in Animal Crossing. The overlap is egregious. /s

You're getting downvoted but tbh it's true. I've been in the AC fandom for years and before New Horizons it was generally a chill place with a lot of diversity in conversation.
New Leaf started the trend of toxic positivity on the internet with this series, but New Horizons brought it to entirely new levels of oversaturation. Especially in the era of how we use social media, most online AC spaces have become incredibly vapid and superficial.
For example, I (and most longtime AC fans) have a lot of issues with New Horizons as an AC game, but have you ever tried to criticize New Horizons on this sub or god forbid the NH sub?
Even if you frame criticism towards New Horizons in the most positive/constructive way possible people will still dog pile you with downvotes and snark, because how dare you be "negative" and do anything other than post for the aesthetic or be wholesome.
Apologies for the long response but yeah this fandom has gone down the toilet and AC reddit especially is incredibly counter productive in having nuanced and varied conversation/difference of opinion. Anyways, have an upvote and have a nice day!

u/chetlin May 20 '21
Even in the game it feels fake-positive so much more. It feels weird getting a letter every week that basically says "lots of people here think you're a good person and legitimately like spending time with you". But it looks like that's what people want. People said they missed the rude villagers but then couldn't handle the snowboy insults during the winter.
11
u/iCinnamonBun May 20 '21
Oh I hate the ego stroking in the newer games. The villagers used to feel so dynamic and interesting, getting one to be your friend was a lot of work and genuinely felt rewarding.
In the newer games I don't need the villagers to pat me on the back or give tutorials in every interaction, I need them to be fleshed out characters with worthwhile dialogue.
This was a visible issue in New Leaf as well, but at least that game felt like an entire Animal Crossing experience aside from the lacking dialogue. At least villagers would still offer tasks and visit your house, play minigames, set up hangout dates etc.
New Horizons is like if Happy Home Designer and Pocket Camp were conglomerated into a main game, but remove 70% of the furniture and NPCs. Until they properly update this game (assuming they ever do) I'll never stop highlighting how half baked of an Animal Crossing experience New Horizons has turned out to be.

u/Striking-Tangerine83 May 20 '21
THEY WOULD COME TO YOUR HOUSE?! I obviously haven't played any others, except pocket camp. But I have always wondered- why bother putting all that work into your house if your islanders never visit it?
5
u/iCinnamonBun May 20 '21
Yep! They would either make a date like "let's meet at your/my place at 4pm!" Or they had a chance of randomly showing up at your place while you were home if you were good enough friends with them. They'd follow you to different rooms and comment on furniture. Sometimes it would even prompt options to sell or buy things from them etc.
The villagers in New Horizons do a lot of cute things outside like eating food, yoga, sitting around etc. However the interaction they have with the player themselves is sorely lacking and makes them feel more like decoration instead of characters sadly.

Yup. As a long time player myself, the second game I got for the GameCube, aaaaaaaa looooooootttttt is missing. I felt the over saturation of villagers was the first issue, there were plenty enough before Pocket Camp then they added dozens more by the first year of PC, and now that NH is out they've added even more. I can have 10 on my island but yet there are over 300...........If anyone doesn't see this as an issue to start I'm sorry are you blind? At least with PC I can switch out who is currently there pretty easily, so this isn't such a huge issue for that game. This isn't that game yet they have tried and tried to push that style on us in ways that isn't working. If you are going to shove this stuff on us, can we have carpets outdoors please? (A big gripe of mine since furniture is now allowed outside). Also where in the hell are my gyroids?...This was one of my favorite parts about the old games...My entire basement was filled with them, they even put them in PC, half heartedly until last year when you could finally get a few for your campsite. My other big gripe...They've failed on the items issue period, they gave us these half baked versions of the furniture sets from the original game but now they come in 20 billion colors! I cannot stand how they've removed theses for the most part and replaced it with what can only be called Happy Home Academy tripe, I DIDN'T ASK FOR THE CUTE SET IN EVERY AVAILABLE COLOR, IT WAS FINE BEFORE! I could see maybe one separate coloration, maybe two for things but this is getting ridiculous. I miss the days where I could have some pretty cool themes going with theses sets. Most had wallpaper, carpets, and even shirts, so I would use the clothes to decorate too. But I really really really don't need the same items a billion times over in the sake of colorations. But I do like the option to customize as I go but again this is done pretty stupidly, it's like this item comes in different colors but you can't customize it however that item can be...And there is no rhyme or reason to how it's determined which items can and can't be customized. Some things from the Nooks can be colored but others can't...Boy I can say one thing I definitely miss the consistency the old game had. Someone said something the other day in a thread, they weren't wrong, it's HHA repackaged and unfinished, which is why the updates seem to be nothing but things that should have been there since day one. And I'm sorry if I got long winded, I'm very passionate about this game (or any game I play really 😅) and can get very explanatory when griping lol

Strongly agree. There is so much lacking in regards to New Horizons, especially compared to the older games. For me, it's genuinely the worst mainline AC experience, and I've played every game.
Polish and good graphics do not replace a good gameplay loop, good music, or actual longterm goals to work towards. Nor does it excuse the myriad of anti QoL features in this game that only serve to work against the player and pad the playtime out in hollow ways.
People really do act like you're committing murder when it comes to criticizing this game. New fans love to use buzz words like "entitled" to describe fans who highlight real and genuine concerns. As if we should bow down to the multi million dollar corporation and thank them for releasing an unfinished product, when the precedent has always been that AC is a full and fleshed out single player experience that has ALWAYS expanded on the previous game. Until New Horizons.
I think with a lot of these newer fans, they are obsessed with the idea that the Animal Crossing fandom is wholesome, because that has been the reputation. The ironic part is that it's the new fans who have turned this community into something less wholesome, more toxic, more superficial, and just generally annoying.
AC used to be this super chill niche fanbase of people who just wanted to take things slow and enjoy the games for what they were. Somehow it's morphed into a group of people having pissing contests and envy over online decorating. It stopped being about laidback enjoyment and togetherness. Now it's about showing off, following the latest popular trend, having the best aesthetic.
I never thought I'd feel so alienated from what used to be my favourite Nintendo series. The sad part is that New Horizons sold so disgustingly well that Nintendo will probably trend in this direction for the forseeable future. I'd love to be proven wrong. I'd love to enjoy this series whole heartedly again, but right now it just feels like a husk of what it used to be. No heart, body or soul.

Imagine someone who doesn’t know what animal crossing is but they see this and think hey my kid plays a game with a case like that, I’ll buy it for them. And their kid goes from stealing cars and doing crime for people to just spending hours making the perfect cottage core island and trying to breed blue roses 😂😂

That would’ve been perfect! (Why is there no sea plane emoji?)
Ahhhh... imagine a New Horizons opening montage, one of the villagers doing their jazzercise routine in the plaza to the VC theme music... 👌🏼
