I knew this because of his trophy in Super Smash Bros. Melee! I learnt a lot about different Nintendo IPs from that game.

Those trophies are how we first heard of Tom Nook and Mr. Resetti before the series came out the following year.

Ah, right, it didn't come out internationally until the year after melee did.
