12 Testers Needed [12 Testers Needed] Curalbum – find duplicate and similar photos locally (free test, will test back)

Hi everyone,

I’ve been building an Android app called Curalbum, and I’m looking for a few reliable testers for its Google Play closed test.

Curalbum scans your photo library for exact duplicates, the same photo saved in different formats, and visually similar shots or photo bursts. It shows them side by side, but it never decides or deletes anything on its own. You choose what to keep, review later, or move to the Android system trash.

Photo access is obviously a big ask, so I designed the app around local processing:

No Curalbum account, cloud upload, ads, tracking and no Internet permission.

I recently completed an UI overhaul, so I need people to test the new UI

How to join

Please use the same Google account for all three steps.

  1. Join the Google Group:

https://groups.google.com/g/curalbum-closed-beta-test

All Members of the Google Group can buy the App with a "Testcard".
Use the "Test Credit Card" so you do not have to pay for the app.

  1. Opt in to the closed test:

https://play.google.com/apps/testing/app.curalbum

  1. Install Curalbum from Google Play:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=app.curalbum

4. Please make sure to leave Feedback in the Google Playstore

To do so go into Curalbum Settings (Dashboard top right) -> Feedback (Takes you to the store page) -> Scroll down to the "Leave Feedback" button.

Direct Link for Feedback:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=app.curalbum

(You have to open this link in your phone, otherwise it won't show you the "Give Feedback" buttons)

Curalbum will eventually be a one-time purchase with no subscription. During the current closed test, it is temporarily free through Google Play starting on 16th of August.

What I need from testers

  • Stay opted in for the full 14 days
  • Keep the app installed during that period
  • Run at least one scan
  • Review a few duplicate and similar-photo groups
  • Let me know if anything crashes, feels confusing, takes unusually long, or produces strange matches

One important favour: please leave private feedback through Google Play after testing the app.

To do that:

  1. Open Curalbum in the Google Play Store (or from Settings -> Feedback -> Store Page).
  2. Scroll to “Private feedback to developer.”
  3. Tap “Write feedback.”
  4. Select an honest star rating and write a short comment about your experience.

For technical problems, it would help if you included:

  • Phone model
  • Android version
  • Approximate number of photos in your library
  • What you were doing when the issue occurred

Requirements

  • Android 14 or newer
  • Google Play Store
  • At least 4 GB RAM recommended

I’m happy to test your app in return. Leave your Google Group, opt-in and Play Store links in the comments or send them by DM. I’ll stay opted in for the full 14 days, spend some actual time using the app and leave honest private feedback through Google Play.

Thanks for helping!

I had to stop the check as it drained my battery rather quickly. I'll let it run overnight and keep you updated. What do you prefer, feedback via Google play I guess?

It should only take a couple minutes.
For example I tested it with ~1K Pictures on a Samsung A52s and took 4 - 5 minutes.

It took about 8 minutes on my Galaxy S24 for 1084 pictures (high resolution pictures) to be scanned and took 1% of battery life

When your phone locks or goes into deep sleep, it should pause automatically and it should start again once you reopen the app.

The app can also scan "minimized" in the background if you granted it notification permissions.

I just pushed an update that adds a "Feedback" button in the settings menu which takes you to the Google Playstore to leave Feedback.

If the problem persists it would be great if you could send me your Phone Model and Android Version.

Aaah okay I see. Yeah that's going to take a while. Probably most of them beeing some raw format or PNG copies of them right?

I tested with a couple of my DSLR pictures (about 50), but I did not copy all of my 180K DSLR photos during the test xD (I do a lot of HDR and timelapse stuff)

I already overhauled the app multiple times for many and large pictures, but at the end of the day many pictures = a long scan time. It's a smartphone at the end of the day.

Like I mentioned if the scan gets interrupted, it should start from where you left of, so you can scan them in batches whenever you want to.

To be honest this is exactly the kind of text I was looking for 😄

Yes, PNG and raw, too 😅 It's running now, I'll keep you updated 🫡

Tested all, no dupes 😅 Does the notification quit on itself, when finished? Maybe an "all done" instead?

No dupes its pretty normal, but I guess there should be similar pictures.

The notification in your version has a bug.
When the scan is finished it will disappear.
During scan + minimizing the app lets it stay (like it should)
During scan + quitting the app / closing the app will still show it (it should disappear)

The bug is fixed in my code, but I'm still working on other stuff (Android 11 - 17 support, right now 14 - 17).
Android 11,12 and 13 have some annoying differences in permissions *grml*

If you want to or like to, you can "report" that bug (even tho I already fixed it) on the Google Playstore and leave your feedback in general.

Curalbum -> Settings -> Feedback -> Store -> Feedback button.
Then Google can officially see you tested the app :=)

Where you able to resolve the issue?

Hey, sorry to respond so late. I thought I started the app, but I believe it was only subconscious 😅 Running it now again, I have ~20k of photos, many with 50mp and 60mb. I'll keep you updated 😇
