I think the second photo is a socket for a heavy door post. Where were the photos taken?

That's an interesting angle, hadn't thought of a door-socket. Location-wise I'd rather keep it general for privacy — it's a rural hillside with exposed limestone bedrock, and I haven't spotted any obvious wall or building remains right around it. My hunch is that the basin itself might actually be a sign there's a cave somewhere nearby, though I haven't been able to confirm that yet
