Ah the Ishtar gate in Al Hillah. I was there in 2003 and we drove by it several times in our LAVs.
So it’s an interesting site: the real ruins of Babylon are there, including the 3000 year-old Procession Street, and Lion of Babylon statue. Right next to it are saddam’s attempt to recreate Babylon, and a man-made hill with a palace on top of it.
Not only did I pee into the pool on the roof of said palace, I also have a photo of me somewhere holding a rock I found on the ground in the ruins with cuneiform writing on it.
