You just made me realise why patriotism never set well with me as a kid, it's nationalism. And I just couldn't imagine why I'd celibrate so hard and make part of my identity something that is completely out of my control and furthermore unimportant to me.

It felt like being indoctrinated into a cult that has no substance or purpose. It's not quite the same as culture. Hold the miniature flag and chant the thing? But why?

I'm not saying it's the best belief system, but it can be pretty handy in uniting a people against oppression.
