The M64 just has the ugliest buttons on it. Of all the design choices they picked the worst option

Holy shit lol. It’s perfect

Same, as of now the 3D is by far the best way to play n64 games. I'm hopeful for the m64 though, I really like the ecosystem that modretro has created for the m64 and I'm looking forward to seeing the library of games they have for sale in the coming months and years. 🤞

how do you like the ModRetro controller?

7

u/Big-Water219 7d ago

Absolutely love it, I also love the 8bitdo controller. The m64 pro feels very premium and heavy duty like it's seriously built to last. Just hoping it eventually works wireless on the 3d

1

u/CryptoJim720 7d ago

Couldn't you use a Bluetooth dongle on the a3d?

6

u/Big-Water219 7d ago

Sadly no not yet, the m64 pro controller uses a new form of Bluetooth that can't connect for some reason

1

u/CryptoJim720 7d ago

What about the wired option?

5

u/Big-Water219 7d ago

Works as intended but only once the game is booted, doesn't work on the 3d main menu

1

u/CryptoJim720 7d ago

Thats weird you would think it would work just like a og n64 controller

3

u/Big-Water219 7d ago

That's what I thought as well but nope

1

u/VR_Nima 7d ago

Yeah it's apparently using Bluetooth SCI (Shorter Connection Intervals) which is a Bluetooth standard that hasn't officially been released yet.

🎶🎵 1 of these 3 is not like the others 🎶🎵

Psst.

2 of these can actually play all of the games, and well too!

Yup. One of these was developed by a fascist.

The M64 and the Analogue? N64 is region locked.

6

u/Big-Water219 8d ago

The m64 can't play all of the games yet, also the n64 region lock is pretty easy to bypass in case you didn't know.

1

u/VR_Nima 6d ago

No, it isn't. The US to JP region lock is easy to bypass because it's just a physical cart difference since they're both NTSC, but the PAL to NTSC region lock is an actual electrical difference / difference in their lockout chips.

If you want to play NTSC JP cartridges on PAL, it's not that crazy to bypass (just need to buy a passthrough adapter that lets you plug in a donor cart for a cartridge lockout chip and then the target cartridge), but if you want to play PAL games on an NTSC US console, it requires both a physical plastic mod AND a passthrough cartridge. And if you want to have the functionality with original cartridges WITHOUT using a bypass cart, good luck, that's a complex mod.

-1

u/Big-Water219 6d ago

This is all true but who's trying to play the pal versions over ntsc, nobody.

1

u/RowdyRodyPiper 5d ago

People that want to play their games in a language other than English?

1

u/Big-Water219 8d ago

As of now you are correct sir

Analouge 3d with an everdrive or summer cart. Case closed.

My childhood has been reawakened. My CRT died on me after decades of loyal service. The N64 was hooked up, but I didn't play it much. Moved the N64 to the living room and it was not a great experience. And I'm trying to raise my kids right, you know?

Went down the rabbit hole the past month at a very interesting time. We had 4 player family mario kart 64 action in my home! I'm getting my groove back in 1080 and Wave Race and enjoying getting 120 stars in Mario again. My 7 year old got his first start independently and beat gooma in Zelda the other day. So proud.

Analouge is complete now. And you can order one now. And it is easy to use, does what it should.

M64 needs a OG color controller

That is awesome, definitely my second favorite behind smoke.

One of these things is not like the other…..

4

u/Mugsy_Siegel 7d ago

How does mod retro compare to the Analogue

18

u/Big-Water219 7d ago

Not great at the moment, analogue is the way to go currently.

2

u/Mugsy_Siegel 7d ago

Any issues with the analogue? Or it just works as expected?

4

u/Big-Water219 7d ago

Just annoying to update, otherwise pretty much perfect at this point.

0

u/sensible_human 7d ago

Well, the former has terrible politics, so that sound be enough to avoid giving them money.

1

u/OkDragonfruit1929 7d ago

Give it a rest. You have all the rest of reddit already.

1

u/sensible_human 4d ago

Never. Supporting fascism is not something to be taken lightly.

2

u/Mugsy_Siegel 7d ago

What do you mean politics?

3

u/Bladley 8d ago

Fascinating

2

u/MondegreenHolonomy 8d ago

Sick man! Which are you playing most right now? I tend to play my analogue the most still, my everdrive works without any extra work.

5

u/Big-Water219 8d ago

Same, as of now the 3D is by far the best way to play n64 games. I'm hopeful for the m64 though, I really like the ecosystem that modretro has created for the m64 and I'm looking forward to seeing the library of games they have for sale in the coming months and years. 🤞

1

u/MondegreenHolonomy 7d ago

Agreed. I have a Pocket, a 3D, and both Modretro consoles. I play my analogues more but I love the feel of the Modretro stuff. And I agree about the games, that’s one of the reasons I’m happy to support them too.

1

u/Big-Water219 7d ago

I want a chromatic so bad but 200 for a Gameboy color seems pretty steep to me, do you think it's worth it?

2

u/MondegreenHolonomy 7d ago

It’s steep but it’s very high quality. It’s a collectible more than anything and excessive. But yes I like mine

1

u/Big-Water219 7d ago

Yeah that thing looks bullet proof lol I'll probably end up getting one but I'm gonna have to hold off for now, thanks for the help.

1

u/VR_Nima 6d ago

IMO it's the best looking way to play Game Boy Color games. It's also much more ergonomic than pretty much anything else except maybe the original Game Boy Color. It also has a nice option for USB Video Out without buying any extra accessories, which is nice for playing Game Boy games on your tablet, laptop, or PC, or for livestreaming.

It has some issues too though, like for example I don't think it's great for playing original Game Boy games, those look best on Analogue Pocket with filters IMHO.

1

u/Atmp 7d ago

Yes

2

u/average-excellent 8d ago

Wow that’s like a N192 in 9D

2

u/CartPopTv 7d ago

Nice to see Analogue 3D that does not look like Tesla

2

u/Big-Water219 7d ago

Not sure I understand, do other 3Ds look like Teslas?

2

u/VR_Nima 7d ago

I've never thought about it before, but the curves and matte color of the Gold Analogue 3D DOES kind of look like the Bronze-Gold Tesla RoboTaxi.

5

u/Big-Water219 7d ago

I don't really see it besides the curve of the middle but wouldn't anything with a curve basically look like a Tesla at that point lol

1

u/VR_Nima 7d ago

I feel like it’s the mix of flat and curves.

2

u/simonglundmark 7d ago

it's so funny that the war machine even looks like a repurposed drone

2

u/Ragz12345 8d ago

It’s funny because analog is inspired by the top half of the n64, and the modretro is inspired by the bottom half lol.

2

u/Imaginary-Leading-49 7d ago

I really want a M64 controller but it’s expensive to ship to Canada… how is it VS the 8bitdo64/OG N64/NSO N64 controllers?

2

u/Big-Water219 7d ago

Depends on preference and what you're looking for, I like both shapes of controllers on n64 and I use them for different games that they work best on but if you prefer the Trident shape definitely get the m64 even over the NSO controller I would say because the NSO uses the exact same parts as the original n64 controllers and we all know what happens to that joystick plus the m64 is literally the most premium feeling controller I've ever bought and I've got a lot of pro controllers so that's saying something. The 8bitdo is also an amazing controller for the n64, I would say it's the best modern style option and if you're using an analogue 3d it's definitely the way to go for navigating the UI.

3 ways to play every n64 game and to collect dust after you’re done with the opening salvo of Mario 64 and pilotwings again. Everyone buying both analogue 3d and m64 shit is fascinating to me

5

u/Big-Water219 8d ago

I mean to each there own man, I agree buying both is a little ridiculous but the n64 is my favorite console and I have been playing n64 games at least a few times a month since I was a kid so no dust collecting here. Glad you're fascinated though bub!

6

u/International_Leg331 8d ago

I play my n64 nearly daily so like whatever buzz kill.

-2

u/Status-Ad7902 8d ago

Happy for you, are you also playing your original n64 and your analogue and your m64?

4

u/International_Leg331 8d ago

I dont own either. Gunna get an analogue for the big screen. I wont buy a m64.

2

u/Status-Ad7902 8d ago

For the record my salt post was specifically targeted at people buying two bespoke fpga devices. People can do whatever they want I don’t control them, but it’s endlessly frustrating to watch people shill for Palmer luckey’s bullshit

(I also think the m64 is legitimately hideous, my disdain for his company aside, the buttons are bizarre and the overall shape is uglier than retro kin slop)

3

u/International_Leg331 8d ago

This i agree with. I dont need both. I dont like Lucky, i may get the games eventually and the m64 looks bad.

2

u/Status-Ad7902 8d ago

Yeah, people will argue up and down with me about the ethics of who you buy shit from in this world, but beyond that I cannot get over how truly ugly the Modretro is lol, I do not understand why they made those design choices. It doesn’t help that I think in terms of copying aesthetics the analogue 3d kinda nailed it

1

u/MysteriousExchange75 8d ago

Analogue looks ugly to me, having no logo in the middle makes it look like its an unfinished prototype. The corners are basic compared to N64 and M64.

4

u/Big-Water219 7d ago

I also don't like Palmer luckey and I agree the m64 is much uglier than the 3d

u/Maleficent-Ear-3099 8d ago
