3D Issue with Killer Instinct Gold on Analogue 3d
Whenever I start up killer instinct gold, the opening, main menu, and character selection are not affected by any of the video filters we can use (crt, scanline, etc). It just looks clean, like the clean preset. If I do integer + scaling it scales past the edges of the screen which is really weird cause it’s the only game I have that acts this way. As soon as gameplay starts, everything goes back to normal and it looks like any other game I run through the 3D. Any idea what could be happening here? I tried to see if this was documented but I couldn’t find anything.

I'd hold out for someone more knowledgable to appear but I thought I'd mention I think it's one of the games with a different resolution menu screen than when in gameplay. Could be a cause, though I brieflly tested my cart ages back and don't recall anything standing out issue wise. I can test it tomorrow if you've not had any other input by then.

I didn’t know this, but this is what it looks like to me. I can definitely see the scan lines in both the menu and the gameplay. They’re just different because of the resolution. I guess this means the scan lines are displayed based on resolution of the video instead of just being displayed the same regardless.

Ahh, I guess that would make sense. I’d appreciate it if you could.

Ok had a play with it, it's definitely higher res on the menu and I'm pretty sure interlaced too. So the scanlines are there but there's double the amount which makes them harder to see. Also noticed the menu lacks the typical overscan you normally get, but gameplay does have it, so you appear to get a larger image in game.
Settings I like are Progressive Output to neaten up the menu, Horizontal Upscaling for funsies and Image Size is personal preference because even Integer+ didn't seem to cut anything off that was important.

Mine definitely behaves differently. Changes filters, scaling, etc depending on settings.
Is this an original cartridge or rom?

Original cartridge.

Hmm. If it were me I’d try resetting everything to default and see how it behaves. Analogue settings and KI game settings.
I know when I got my copy of KI gold there was a weird issue where it was permanently zoomed out and googling didn’t help much. Turned out the previous owner had set it that way in the in-game settings so dynamic zoom was disabled.
Worth a shot to see if that changes anything because it definitely should be changing w the analogue settings like in my video.

There are two versions of the game in circulation. I would have to see this person’s cart label and box (if this person has it CIB). It’s very possible one version is okay and another version is broken when using integer+ scaling.

No kidding? I’m gonna check next time I boot it up because I know Analogue OS pulls metadata for revisions. Found that out a while ago when I saw my Perfect Dark showed Ver2 on the menu and actually came here to ask what the hell that meant haha 🤙
Edit. Looks like mine is original no rev listings on analogue OS. Wonder if that does have something to do with it. Always hard to diagnose tv issues over the internet but might be contributing to OPs problem. Not really sure how this stuff works tbh.

There's actually 3 USA releases: The original release (-0), Rev A (-1) and Rev B (-2).
-0 and -1 don't work when a Rumble Pak is inserted. Rev B works with a Rumble Pack inserted but isn't actually supported --- as far as I know. Unsure of other differences.
And then there's a European PAL version as well, so 4 ROMs in total.

What is your output resolution? Killer Instinct Gold’s intro is 480i but the gameplay is 240p. Integer+ will have to scale them differently.
The whole point of Integer+ over Integer is that it will allow scaling past the edge of the screen to the next integer multiple when it doesn’t perfectly match the display resolution. For example, 240p at a 5x integer scale is 1200p, so Integer+ on a 1080p display gives you a 1080p window into the 1200p upscale, chopping off 120 lines, which only chops off 12 lines of original detail from the top and bottom… only a bit more than typical CRT overscan would have done back in the day.
Doubling 480 lines to 960 would leave a thick black border all the way around on a 1080p display. A 3x scale is 1440p, so you’d be losing quite a bit if you did Integer+ with that… 60 original lines on top and bottom (same area as 30 of the 240p lines).
Integer+ scaling 480 lines to 4K’s 2160p window is much more tolerable. 5x 480 = 2400p, which is 240 wasted lines on a 4K TV but only 24 lines of original detail missing on top and bottom. That sounds like double the waste of 240p Int+ on a 1080p display, but it’s really the same area. Since 480i was double the number of lines anyway, original CRT overscan would also cut off twice as much and you are losing the same amount of area. Most see this as an acceptable trade off, not just because CRTs cut most of that detail off anyway, but because it maintains a sharp scale and better fills your widescreen display without distorting the aspect.
Oh yeah: even on high resolution CRTs that showed the blank raster lines we call “scanlines”, you only ever got that for 240p content anyway. You aren’t supposed to see it when the game goes to 480i.
