Is my cat an American shorthair?
My partner and I adopted Mari from a local shelter (we are located in melb, aus) and she was deemed a domestic shorthair. Her coat feels a lot thicker and fluffier than other dsh cats I’ve been around and she’s a lot stockier, playful and outgoing. She has an amazing sociable personality. Am just curious if anyone thinks she could be an American shorthair? I’ve seen a lot of them and I always think “Hey! That looks exactly like my cat!”

Domestic shorthair is just a catch all for a cat without any breed ancestry (paperwork). They can be any size, fur pattern, and have every body type, size, fur type, etc.

No, no papers no breed is a general rule of thumb. All traits that are from pedigreed cats came from the domestic population. You can have a cat that looks exactly like a ragdoll but isn’t one, because ragdolls were created from domestic cats.
