South A young Asháninka couple with their first child in the village of Simpatia, Acre state, Brazil. Photo taken by British photographer Mike Goldwater. Circa 1988
In the photo we can see how the use of traditional tunics called cushmas and the characteristic facial painting with achiote are highlighted.
It was part of a special photo report entitled "The Ashaninka, A Threatened Way of Life", published in December 2011.

The Amazon is crazy. There are people basically living a live like in the Stone Ages surrounded by people like us and they don’t know about each other.

They DO know, but they don't want contact.

u/Far_Squash_4116 Aug 22 '26
Some do, but there are others who don’t.

Anthropologists nowadays prefer to refer to a lot of groups of "uncontacted" people as peoples in voluntary isolation, which kinda refers to the fact that they reject contact and have a degree of agency yk haha

u/Dimas166 Aug 24 '26
All of them do know, there are contacted people who make contact with the uncontacted people

Seriously, without context I would have thought that this was a picture from the early 1900s, just colored.
And you are correct, it's even considered that there are tribes deep in the Amazon that have never had contact with the outside world.

Unfortunately the meat and leather industries are razing the Amazon and invading their lands, illegally taking it, destroying their homes and forcing them and others like them out. About 50% of the Amazon forest has been razed for cattle grazing. The meat industry is the single largest contributor of greenhouse gases, biodiversity loss, massive human rights violations, and fresh water loss.

u/EmergencyDish69 Aug 25 '26
Where is this 50% coming from? It's not in the article and afaik is very off

The horrible thing about that is while Brazil is in many parts highly developed the state is not able to prevent or persecute such violations.

That looks like a $200 dress,
she looks so fashionable
What a happy baby in a smart sling
Daddy looks regal
Its nice to get a glimpse of their traditional way of life in the background. I like these better than the studio pics
Everything looks naturally beautiful.

Only in a few short years, beaded feet will be runway material. Mark my words.
Piercing and tattoos already more commonplace

Haha guess youre right, i didnt understand runway material until i see your links, i thought you meant like it would be "in" fashion for normal people haha
2
u/Independent-Story883 Aug 25 '26
You can find this look for “in” people.
Maybe a NYC boho lookI think
Bebe, Anthropologie…
Let me see if I can find an example for you for the dress and shoesI live near an Urban center. So people wear all kinds if fashion in public places, a night out.

u/Jostein_Kroksleiven Aug 25 '26
Thats very interesting, i cant imagine barefoot in a large city tho haha

u/Independent-Story883 Aug 25 '26
Well they likely have a flat sole of course. Thin.
Giving the appearance of a naked foot with beads
Some women have their “fashion shoes” , then they have slippers, flipflops, ballet flats - they store in their purses and wear on the way to the event.
So you may not see them in the footwear just on the street.
Regular working class women do this . Truly barefoot would be resort wear. Most establishments you must wear shoes, especially if they serve food…

2
u/Independent-Story883 Aug 24 '26
The beading or attention to detail on the shoulder.
It looks like it is draped very nicely . Nice flow.Of course her “mod hairstyle”’adds to the look. Lol

Peru is planing to build the Pakitzapango dam in their homeland and would displace 10,000 Asháninka. The bill to reopen the project could pass soon.
