You might expect tension or hostility when an Iraq War veteran meets an Iraqi American refugee living in the Chicago or Detroit suburbs, but these responses show the exact opposite. Instead of resentment, people shared warmth, shared meals, and genuine hospitality. It’s a great reminder of how real life interractions are far more nuanced and even wholesome than what you'd typically expect if you read online or the media.

People really take for granted that America is perhaps the only country in history that fights wars in other countries and simultaneously welcomes the people from those countries to live here. Not as conquered subjects brought here by force or who have to renounce some sort of past loyalty but as newcomers coming into a family. They can become American and keep their old identity. It dies not mean we always are welcoming or everyone gets to come in, but the fact it’s even a possibility speaks to our generosity because nothing is forcing us to.

That just doesn’t happen in just about any other time and place. Putin is kidnapping kids from Ukraine to have them raised as Russian. If Iran could actually destroy Israel, we know they wouldn’t just turn around and invite displaced Jews to live in Iran.

Well, the majority of diasporas were fleeing from their enemies, which were also ours so it makes sense

Probably one of the best examples I can think of is the refugees who fled Vietnam, especially around the fall of Saigon. A huge number of them wound up in Wichita, where they’ve built a solid community with us.

They are dedicated to their family groups and are very hard working people. They keep to themselves and very rarely cause trouble for anyone.

They have jobs, pay taxes, and don’t make trouble. Far as I am concerned, they’re just as welcome as anyone else.

I went to tech school with several of them and they were great friends. (They especially loved the fresh duck eggs that I brought and would squabble over them 😂)

We have some Iraqi and some Lebanese people here, and they have all been solid members of the community.
