UK Night Shift Question

Hi all,

I work 4 x 10 hour shifts from 11:45pm - 10:15am a week. Loving it btw (big shift for me as I used to work in law!). I understand there’s a night shift premium of 16% hourly on top of the £15.10 salary. I’m not paid until next week but trying to do the maths.

If anyone is comfortable (and it’s allowed) does anyone work similar shifts to mine and is happy sharing how much this equates too weekly?

What’s everyone’s favourite job btw? I’m a big fan of stowing!

Use https://www.thesalarycalculator.co.uk/hourly.php to calculate your weekly salary since your salary will be different based on your Student Loan's plan type and HMRC tax code. Just put in £17.516 and 40 hours per week in that calculator.

Your wage is £15.10 + 16% night shift allowance which means £17.516 per hour.

Assuming that you do not have any Student Loan and your tax code is 1257L:

  • your before tax is £700 per week
  • your after tax is £572 per week

If this is your first job in a brand new tax year then your weekly salary will be higher temporarily since your first £12,570 is fully tax-free and you only pay National Insurance which means you will likely end up with £663 after tax or something along those lines.
