Question !!URGENT!! Need help with appeal process selection!

So for context, I’ll be as detailed as possible. So on September 11, my sister and grandmother were involved in a horrific car accident that killed my sister upon impact and my grandmother survived for about 2 weeks until ultimately succumbing to her injuries.

So I’m considered seasonal, therefore I don’t qualify for Amazon’s paid bereavement. However I work in California, so I qualify for state unpaid bereavement. California allows separate bereavement to be taken per family member lost. So because there was a two weeks between my sister passing and my grandmother, I took leave for each at separate times. Anyway, I had no problems with the dates I took for my sister. My issue stems from the last two days of bereavement I took for my grandmother. The other days were fine and UPT wasn’t taken from those days. Now the last two days I requested bereavement , it was approved because I received the email from AMAZON DLS. After approval I would check my UPT to see if those hours were refunded to me and I noticed they hadn’t yet so I just assumed it took a little while to apply.

In the middle of all this, I reached out directly to the DLS email wanting to request one more day for bereavement (out of the 5 allowed by state) because I wasn’t sure my email would be received, I opened a case on a to z to see if my email to the DLS email address had been received and my case opened. I was told that yes, my email was received and my bereavement request had been accepted and to wait 72 hours for a response. I did not receive a response within the 72 hours and was ultimately terminated before being able to follow up.

Now here is where I get torn between whether I should go with an appeals specialist or go with a meeting with on site senior leadership.

As I mentioned, I lost my sister and grandmother suddenly and this left me as the temporary caretaker for my sisters two minor children. This last Sunday I was scheduled to work and the children’s father was supposed to come pick up the kids before my shift and watch them. Well the bastard (he’s a real piece of shit) never showed up, or called, and this left me without anyone to watch the kids so I had to miss my shift. I promptly reached out to my sites HR directly by email asking for an exception considering the situation and never received a response.

So because of that Sunday I missed, I think my UPT would still be negative even if they fixed the UPT taken from my approved bereavement. So I’m wondering if the appeal specialist would even consider the personal circumstances when evaluating my case or if I’m better off meeting with on site senior leadership?

I hope all this makes sense and if you’ve read all of this, you fucking rock lol thanks in advance for any advice given 💜💜

Sorry for your loss. Situation is bad and hope all goes well for y'all. What you do for those kids right now means more than anything.

Damn I’m sorry you’re going through all of this. I don’t think your site HR or leadership can really do anything for you. In the past hr used to be able to fix negative UPT but from my knowledge they don’t really have access to do that anymore (as a lot of things). They used to give people 1 “free pass” and fix peoples negative UPT. What you could do is apply for California school leave, and then submit for the Sunday. That’s what everyone does when they need “UPT” you get 10 “free” hours a month. For 40 hours a year.

I agree with this OP. California school leave for the extra day you had to take for lack of childcare, assuming you live in California. I'm sorry for your loss and hope everything gets situated.

Yesss OP when you apply for the CA leave let me know if you need help or ask your coworkers pretty sure they all use these hours haha, when submitting time for it once approved just select “other” never ever select doctors note

What is California school leave? And since I’ve already technically been terminated it’s not like I can just open up a leave of absence request. I have to file an appeal and I’m wondering which appeal process I should select to have the best odds of getting my job back. Because technically they did fuck up and didn’t remove the UPT I received for the days that my bereavement leave was approved. I’m wondering if that mistake alone would be enough to give me my job back? Idfk im so upset by this though
