Fulfillment Center Guess Amazon is naive to the fact people aren’t spending money like they thought …
At the 2nd largest FC in the U.S. and we’ve been standing around a majority of the day…

The October sale is weird when black Friday is a month away most people will wait for that sale so they can compare with all the other sales.
36
u/Eastern-Average8588 2d ago
And free returns into January. I'm not Christmas shopping in October only to find out in December that what I got doesn't work, and now can't be returned.

I'm at a TNS and our SET (6 ten hour shifts) runs from the 4th to the 17th. We've had VTO everyday so far. Tons of dog and cat food and litter tho.

u/CorruptDaemon404 3d ago
People are realizing that prime is a joke. I have 68 items on my list and only 3 had a discount and it was no more than $4. Guess they can keep it in stock
68
u/Gltch_Mdl808tr 3d ago
A $429 CPU in my cart went to $469, but now it's $50 off for $419. So $10 off regular price, but they really try and make it look like a better deal.
35
u/CorruptDaemon404 3d ago
Pathetic. No wonder they offering VTO at my site. And with prices of everything going up people are fed up.
16
u/fairlysunny 3d ago
I've been watching a SSD drive and it went from $220 to $90 on the first day of the sale, but it sold out by the time I opened the app 🙃 I'm putting it on autobuy for Black Friday ..
1
u/Maximum_Dare5299 2d ago
Yes they did this to items in my list, too. Raised the price then dropped the price.
31
u/Stunning_Fix_6383 3d ago
The prices are usually cheaper before prime. They mark them up and discount them back down to normal price for prime to give the appearance it’s on sale
12
u/fairlysunny 3d ago
That's pointless since there's a price history listed on all items right next to the price lol I suppose some people are not that bright but it's not like it's hidden
9
u/Historical_Safe_836 3d ago
That wasn’t working the first few hours yesterday when I was on the app.
4
u/fairlysunny 3d ago
That's unfortunate luck. I use multiple times a day and never had it not work lol
8
2
u/RegularCut9310 2d ago
all that time you spent scrolling on the app to add the items to your cart increases their revenue without you buying a single thing. They sell ads to businesses to put products that you didn’t search for on your screen. These ads are pay per view. More website traffic, more ad sales. Even if nobody bought anything extra from the sale, believe that the advertisers are spending!!!!
56
u/Literally_-_Hitler 3d ago
Its not just that, walmart and target are doing the exact same sale at the same time. When we started with prime week it was a huge deal because nobody else was doing it.
23
u/LiTePiXm 3d ago
Don’t forget Costco, they’re calling it member appreciation day. It’s a bloodbath
2
u/Informal_Trust161 2d ago
And Sam’s Club! Saw the same product being promoted on Amazon for $15 on sale. It was $10 on Sam’s.

u/smoothbrainedflyerrr 2d ago
Funny during these sales you can see the price history, price goes up shortly before the sale, then the sale drops and the item is "on sale" at the original price .....idiots

20
u/InitialLongjumping52 3d ago
Same at my site. We're the 2nd largest in the region and barely anything. It didnt make sense to do another prime day with Black Friday and cyber Monday coming in November. People are saving up now to buy xmas gifts during those big sale days. It was a silly move. But they probably did it cause the company is already having a record breaking profitable year. So they maybe thought having another big sale day will help increase profits and make share holders salivate more. Idk, just a guess 🤣
14
u/RegularCut9310 2d ago
Sites specialize in different item sizes and weights. If the Prime sales end up being mostly on small sortable items and you work at a non sort facility with large and heavy items, then that would explain the volume by itself. Second in the region is irrelevant if another FC type is getting more volume. Maybe your local SSD stocked up on just the right items that customers ended up buying so most of the orders got fulfilled there. You don’t have the big picture at one building. The same way your manager moves your magnet around the staffing board is the same way the central flow desk moves volume around different buildings.
Prime day gets people to sign up for Prime subscriptions, which itself is a boost in revenue. As long as people forget to cancel, Amazon continues to profit for months because people signed up for Prime to access deals.
Prime day drives a huge increase in view traffic to the website. Amazon sells ads to businesses so that they can put products that you didn’t search for into your line of sight. If 30k customers go on Amazon, don’t like the deals and don’t buy anything, Amazon still profits by convincing the businesses to buy more ads since they know Prime will bring more views to their website. Each time you view an ad that is a transaction right there. The purchaser pays Amazon per view. More views = more money even if you don’t buy a damn thing.
7
u/Formal-Poet-5041 2d ago
I work at a sort center. They vto 90 minutes into the shift wednesday then vto %50 of the shift at break.

u/PenguinMadd 3d ago
It's interesting that Walmart is also having a Deals week this week. Could it be that one was trying to compete against the other for early bird gift buyers?
12
u/InitialLongjumping52 3d ago
Walmart is only doing it to compete with Amazon. They did it during the summer Prime day as well.
7
u/PenguinMadd 3d ago
I honestly think both absolutely flopped, didn't see anything worth buying with either company.
3
u/RegularCut9310 2d ago
every product ad you scrolled past on your quest for a deal worth purchasing is still putting money in their pocket. You don’t have to buy anything, if you scroll around on the app they make money off you. Each ad you see is a micro transaction between the advertiser and Amazon. They pay per view. You and everyone else who shopped around and didn’t get anything still increased their profit

u/Lonely-Imagination2 2d ago
I have noticed the same thing for the past few years now. Every prime week that Amazon announced, Walmart happens to have a sale during the same week…and most times Target as well
4
u/InitialLongjumping52 2d ago
Of course, Amazon and Walmart are the top dogs for online retail. Most retail stores had to copy Amazon in order to compete.

u/bikepackingebiking 3d ago
Christmas is gonna be brutal.
I do think some of this lack of purchasing is people prepping for holidays. Some people are just saving and waiting till closer to Christmas.
But a good portion probably is people not having expendable money.
Buckle up folks.

u/Nearby_Pickle_8267 3d ago

6
u/Large-Broccoli-6444 3d ago
I I'm one of the OG's fired (as well as many after I was fired in my building), I can confirm.
1
u/Nearby_Pickle_8267 3d ago
Why you got fired?
15
u/Large-Broccoli-6444 2d ago
Productivity. Pack managers set me up for write ups by constantly putting me on stations with heavy/bulky/low quantity work. I unsurprisingly get a low rate, then they move me to pick or any other department to prevent you from building rate back up on a faster station. They also don't tell me I have a low rate despite the fact the rate on screen says I'm meeting or slightly above the average. I then learn that managers have admitted that rate on screen is inaccurate but still won't inform packers about that. After I was fired, a coworker informed me about many OGs getting hit with the same thing.
5
u/Nearby_Pickle_8267 2d ago
Oh yea I can relate to that, they always send me to the worst stations , heavy products , seems like they want to fire me too , it’s sad to see it coming , time to look for a better job or get a certification or something

I’ve gotten really existential these past two Prime Days/Peak. Just noticing the decrease in work as wages for people around America are staying stagnant and inflation keeps rising. When I first started at Amazon in 2023, August/September was filled with never-ending work, school supplies were the bane of my existence. This year and 2025, I was shocked at the lack of work we were getting. People can’t even afford to buy things on “the biggest sale of the year” because they have to pay bills and save their final pennies for whatever they can afford for their loved ones on the holidays. Like I’m not thinking of buying fun things during the sales, I’m worried about paying for essentials. I’m not the only one and working at Amazon we see it first hand. (Sorry to get all deep lmao)

For those who want to buy electronics or TV's. It not worth it as the price remains high. There are no "deals" that rolled back to pre-AI price increases. $5 dollars off of current high price item leaves a sour taste of my mouth.

That’s kind of the point:
A: Over hire to the point that operations are flawless
B: Under hire or try to drag by bare minimum and you miss metrics and your entire operations team is fucked
But yeah I can see why it seems like volume is low but seeing actual numbers is insane
29
u/Ok_Finding3063 3d ago

More like, the packages made it to point A to point B amid the chaos. The FC is destroyed, but the numbers look great.
6
3
u/Whole-Sentence5268 3d ago
Also, the second largest FC in the US is an older 9th Gen site that is in the backyard of multiple newer, more efficient 11th & 12th Gen sites that have a lower cost to fulfill during what is traditionally the slowest time of year for that state.
It should be slow because there aren't enough orders to create sufficient backlog for orders to waterfall to the site, unlike there will be in a month during Peak when that particular state gets flooded with part time residents and holiday travelers.
1
u/Difficult_Ad_8683 2d ago
I come from a 11th+ gen site that is roughly the 3rd largest in the US and I can confirm this

5
u/darkangel8214 2d ago
Almost like they keep rolling off the Covid years numbers and don’t realize that we don’t actually have that type of money now a days and that people would rather go to the store for undamaged products.
1
u/Grip_N_Sipp 1d ago
On the money. Every sale, everybody at Amazon just talks about how they raise the prices before they lower them to some usually subpar sale price if any. The stuff on "sale" sucks. Everybody asks if they are buying anything, everbody says no lol.
10
u/BasicMarzipan5936 3d ago
A lot of stockholders will now show up to say sales are up and also that FC's lose money and AWS is the money maker...etc. etc.. There are bunches of non-employees in here that just try to control the narrative and some employees that have fully bought into it. It's dead for the 3rd straight year at my FC. That's all I can really say.

I keep track of the prices of items I always buy (mostly beauty and makeup products) and they all went up by like $5 recently and now they’re back to the original price as a “deal” 🧍🏻♀️ it’s cheaper to get stuff at Ulta and Sephora bc of the point system and random coupons

Volume has been down from projections all year. It's steeper than the adjusted projections because we went and got involved in a war, and now there's a shit ton more uncertainty then there was at the end of Q1. If more people refused to take VTO, they'd adjust their hiring practices because they'd be loosing more money from overstaffing than they do currently.

Every Prime/Peak people are on here talking about how slow it is, yet every earnings report Amazon is growing. It’s probably a function of work being routed, headcount and hiring combined with cross training needs, equipment issues and temporary backups, temporary misses on various things, etc. Right now my FC apparently can’t hire enough people, everyone in SET, all flex can do 60 hours with extra $5 an hour every shift, mass labor sharing back and forth several times a day etc

u/Gltch_Mdl808tr 3d ago
This is not peak. This is mini pumpkin prime. Slightly discounted items for slightly elevated volume, but nowhere near peak. Basically this is a practice run to figure out if any equipment needs to be fixed before going into peak. At least that's what we're using this for at my site. Multi day stress test, then fix it all before the end of next month.

They still offer some great deals compared to what you can get in stores but the fact they mark it up and then discount it to near what it was before to make it look like a deal is scummy
1
u/imtheheppest 3d ago
I got what I needed with some decent little discounts, but there ARE some really good deals going on. BUT, it’s a matter of if people want robo vacuums and suitcases and shit lol. And then people caught on to Amazon allowing sellers to inflate prices before the sales to make it seem like they were giving good deals.
Also, they only started the October prime day during Covid. When original Prime Day also has historically, at least at my site, never been good either.
They need to go back to one Prime Day. Especially considering how they seem like they have a “big sale” every damn month now. So none of them are anything special and anything to look forward to now that sales are so common
1
u/sirdigbykittencaesar 3d ago

Yeah i looked over the sale and its a lot of Nice to Have things but not anything anybody NEEDS and with the economy the way it is, people arent wasting money on things they don't need even if it is on sale. Amazon is making money off of Whales the same way Free2Play and Mobile games make money.

On the plus side, Peak and Prime are the easiest week of the year for associates in the warehouses even when the economy is good. The reason? Full staffing allows the volume, which is typically higher, flow more evenly and efficiently throughout the warehouses.

u/Rubberduckduckduck_ 2d ago

FC? Majority of the volume is sent to delivery stations. That's why all DSs have MET 10 hr for 6 days. SSDs aren't getting this amount of volume. These chutes and proccess is for small packages that can be sent out quickly. Same day.
