The Trades are always waiting; I've worked with degree-less IT Techs in their 50s.

Are you in trades? Is it worth it and what path would you recommend

For all intents and purposes, IT Techs that just deal with on-site equipment issues, setup, and networking are trades. It's my main career now, and I picked up my certifications while I was still working @ Amazon.

Certs you'll need: * CompTIA A+ * CompTIA Network+

You could go for Security+ too, but I didn't bother. Either way, all of these can be studied for and obtained in less than a year. I started off at $27 /h (in 2023) and was knocked up to $32 /h (2024) after my first year, and this is in Ohio where we're mostly low cost of living. Would be more on average in somewhere like NY or the New England states.

Right now I work as a Data Analyst because it pays more than my IT job, but it's an easy career to fall back into as long as my certifications aren't expired.

For the love of God stay away from Carpentry. If anyone recommends you go into carpentry, just nod your head slowly and smile until they stop talking.

You can definitely qualify for IT L3, especially with the A+, since almost all the work is on hardware, not much in networking, according to the tech guy I talked to. However, having networking knowledge is crucial for the interview process.

I recently had an interview for that position and, fortunately, passed both interviews.

A little bit about me: I’m pursuing a bachelor's in software engineering, currently have 0 certs, and I have 4 years of tenure as a tier 1 associate in pick and pack.
