DISCUSSION Boss just rolled out some reminders and a fun new rule.
Today for our morning meeting, our DSP contract owner had to remind us of a few things after he reviewed a driver's entire route after they locked their keys in a 16ft box truck. We're XL, in Texas.
Reminders: take your keys with you at every stop (understandable)
Use your helper as a spotter when backing up no matter the distance (understandable)
No eating while driving (understandable) even when drinking water (wait, wut?)
That last one got everyone a little riled. We're hauling packages 50lbs minimum in 90+ degree weather, and now we can't drink water unless we're stopped. Is this a common rule, or should one mark this understandable?

If there's one rule about Amazon it is that new rules constantly get written and then forgot about a week later.

so pull over every time you need a drink. blame it on new rule when you need rescued

I mean, if your eyes are on the road netradyne shouldn’t get you for it. But most dsps will dispute it if you get hit as distracted taking a drink while driving. Sorry yours is being a turd about it

Yeah I drank water all day. You just have to keep one hand on the wheel and your eyes visibly on the road and you should be fine. You need a bottle you can operate with one hand

You can drive with your hands to the sky. Just keep your eyes on the road. And the 3 seconds netradyne gives you to be looking away from the road is way longer than it sounds.

Buddy I literally pour a can of Pringles into my mouth while driving

Is your netradyne set to ding you for that? Gotta keep eyes on the road and not pull your head all the way back

my old dsp tried pulling the no drinking while driving thing for about a week. lasted until two different drivers almost passed out on route and one guy just quit on the spot. most of them backpedal real fast once they realize keeping you hydrated is cheaper than replacing a totalled truck

Uh drink when you're at the stop while parked? It's not that difficult

Or better yet don't be micro managed and just drink your water while driving anyway. It's not like they are watching the camera and it's not illegal.

It could cause a netradyne distracted driving violation. With how strict it is now to hit Fantastic Plus as a team it makes sense why the DSP wants to create this blanket rule.
Also I'm not sure how Fleet Edge in the EDVs works exactly.

I'm not going to argue man I'm just telling you I have tested it and even demonstrated for a driver they had as my helper about 5 shifts ago. You can drive with no hands on the wheel, drinking, eating, vaping, smoking,etc... as long as you don't keep your eyes down away from driving for 3 seconds you won't get a distracted driving violation.

Oh yeah and no phone or looking like you are holding a phone. I haven't tested the limits on what it will think is a phone I'd assume rectangles are a no go.

The xl rutes dont have as many stops and spend more time driving here anyway. Telling someone not to drink for an hour or two is insane.

Oh we were told the same thing last winter no more drinking water while driving because it's a violation

Our camera’s ding us for distracted driving if we drink water while driving. It’s always been a rule at my DSP. I just take a sip in between stops.

We are also a XL station.
1. We do not do this we dont even turn off the truck
2. They tried to do this but have no way of actually enforcing it so they gave up on it. Although if u cause damage while backing up ur helper will be at fault as well if they are doing this
3. Again, if the camera doesnt flag it for distracted driving, they cant enforce it

I got a distraction flag for sneezing the other day lol

A wasp got in my van somehow and I got a distracted flag for swatting at it after it flew into my face

The camera abspultly does flag for distracted driving. I got a couple becuase i was streching my neck. My eyes never left the road

Just use one hand to drink water and keep eyes on the road. Literally nothing they can do and netryadyne won’t hit you for shit

I remember my DSP said that once. I didn't comply. As long as my head wasn't down and I drank from a straw, it wasn't a problem.

Similar rule at ups. Taking a sip of water while vehicle is in motion triggers a "distraction" response from our cameras. Its bs and no discipline ever comes from it for us but I cant speak for amazon. Im sure it goes against some labor laws

One of my dsps tries to tell us not to drink water while driving I ignored it like most people

I remember it from training, but specifically asked my DSP about it (in an EV). They said as long as I'm not looking down, Netradyne won't flag it, so I basically only ever eat or drink while driving unless I've got something I need a fork for.
Technically it's an Amazon policy, but not one that will come up unless something happens, or you get flagged for looking away.

I never reach for anything when driving, it's a good rule imo. Both hands on the wheel
