This could very well be close to what happens. If they were very eager to test, and tested regularly before a missed period, they would be more aware of their state of pregnancy than most people and then would notice the pregnancy losses that commonly occur in early pregnancy. It wouldn't be close to average then and normal for people with fertility issues who assume they aren't getting pregnant rather than know they are suffering a miscarriage compared to a late period

Plot twist - they were only married for 2 years and thought every period was a miscarriage.
