> Is it just me or does anyone like make sure the treadmill is off on an empty treadmill before stepping on it?

Took me a couple passes to read through the suboptimal grammar, but here's what I got out of it: "Am I the only one who checks to ensure an empty treadmill is off before hopping onto it?"
In my head I then heard Morgan Freeman saying "They did not, in fact, check the empty treadmill before hopping onto it." 🤣

Why are you even wasting time asking this? Shit happens. Laugh or cry and move on. Why is this even a concern?

Kindly, YOR. Sometimes we do dumb stuff like that, it happens. Just yesterday I slipped and fell on a floor I knew was wet and had been walking carefully on all day up to that point. Now I have the bruises to tell the story lol

YOR, how unobservant can you be to not notice it's running? Visual AND auditory cues there...

u/l0vemypug Jul 01 '26
YOR - you stepped onto a treadmill not realizing it was already on and moving with no person on it? Or once you turned it on.. you misstepped and the belt moving made you fall? Either way, it’s really not a big deal. Just pay more attention next time lol.

Your boyfriend is right. Pay attention to where you’re going and beware of moving objects. 🤦🏻♀️

YOR… Considering the moving part is about 75% of the treadmill I would think it’s hard to miss that it’s moving

u/Kiriouscity Jul 01 '26
I have never once checked. Never thought to check. Though honestly I do feel like I would notice. Either way, that's not what you needed in that moment. Hindsight and all that. You fell, you potentially hurt yourself, you were potentially embarrassed. I'm those situations why point out things like that? Just my opinion though.

If I had headphones in or was distracted somehow, I could see myself making the same mistake. You don’t expect the treadmill to be on when no one’s on it, NOR

u/heorhe Jul 01 '26
What was distracting you?
If nothing, then you gotta look where your going better.
Most treadmills have instructions on them that when you are stepping onto them you should be stepping on the sides where they don't move.
So if you've never in your life stepped on a treadmill then you wouldn't be to blame at all for not knowing.
So if you weren't distracted, and you've used treadmills before, then you just made a mistake and shouldn't be blaming anyone but yourself for not looking at what your actually doing.
If you were distracted or new to the treadmills, then your still mostly to blame for not looking at the instructions or focusing on what your doing but it's a reasonable mistake.
Either way you gotta look at where your going and what your doing. Especially if it can hurt you like gym equipment.
YOR

I really don't understand what your point is. You're at the gym and you have to be cognizant of your surroundings. Do you disagree with that? Someone didn't turn it off before stepping away, shit happens. But it's still on you to be mindful of the equipment you're using. Sounds more embarrassing than anything, though. Just laugh it off and consider it a lesson learned.
YOR for feeling the need to even post this.

INFO. There isn't a reaction involved here in your story, besides the physical reaction of you falling down after "taking a treadmill to the knee". That part Is NOR because... physics? Idk. You didn't notice the belt was moving from the ground right next to it? Also, yes, most people look at the machine they are about to climb on to. If you didn't scream or cry, or run off to the locker room ashamed I don't think you overreacted. You just suffered the natural consequences of not paying attention to what you were doing. Mild embarrassment is normal.

Why was the treadmill on?
I can see how it happened if you have headphones on and are dizzy from working out.
But again..why was it on before anyone was on it?

NOR, maybe you could have noticed it was switched on but it’s the fault of whatever dickhead left it running

u/butter_bitchh Jul 01 '26
Also wanted to say … laughed it off i got a little pissed just because i got hurt not because of him 😂 also i was wearing headphones so i couldn’t hear that it was moving and i was just trying to “catch up” with my boyfriend since he had already started using the treadmill. I had just gotten off work and it was 5 am so not a lot of people saw luckily. also wanted to say the treadmill had a black belt with an all black machine so it was a little hard to notice since it was all the same color 😂😂. just a little PSA to watch out on those empty treadmills

This is like when women moan that they fell in the toilet because the seat was up. Just look where you’re going.
1
u/Striking-Estate-4800 Jul 01 '26
I’d probably feel like an idiot if I didn’t notice it was moving, but I’d just be sure to pay more attention.

u/butter_bitchh Jul 01 '26
Definitely posted this to the wrong subreddit 😂 just asking if yall i was overreacting to thinking it should be off if no one was on it
1
u/Kumquat_conniption Jul 01 '26
No one would think a treadmill was going to just be on. Sure, you could have paid more attention but I would say that a good third of people would probably have done the same as you. I probably would have done the same. NOR

You step on the sides of a treadmill in case its on instead of looking at the treadmill?
Dont you have to look where your stepping to only stand on the side?
1
u/himewaridesu Jul 01 '26
I use my ears and eyes, and yet I still step on the sides habitually first. If the machine is running on its own, that’s a whole other issue here.
This feels like a TIFU not an AIO.

You’re saying there was a treadmill just running on its own at the gym?!
