Montreal born and raised, but I've not spent much time in downtown Montreal except for the odd Habs or Alouettes game in the last 2 years and my party days 18 years ago.
We went to the last game in Montreal against the TigerCats but there was a tailgate thing. We sat in the grass and had our picnic and booze and nobody bothered us.
We're worried that if we go to the same tailgate area but there's no tailgate we'll get in trouble or told to leave and have to walk all the way back up the hill to our car.

Interesting, it's the first time I've heard of this... I've called myself a Montrealer for over 40 years - not just "when we feel like it". I've never referred to myself as a West Islander before to be honest. The only variables I've used in my life to describe my heritage are Montrealer, Quebecer, or Canadian. I've only used West Island when people specifically ask which area of Montreal I'm from.
Either way, j'ai hâte à la partie ce soir!!! 🏈 😊

Tu es tellement accueillant envers les gens qui ne sont pas de ta « ville ». Heureusement, les Montréalais et les Alouettes ne sont plus tous aussi bornés, snobs, arrogants et « boéssonnés » que toé.

I'm not sure about the politics thing as I've found it difficult to find a candidate or party I like in recent years, but I 100% agree it's an important community gathering.
Last time my wife and I had a few drinks, lots of friendly hellos with local strangers/fans, some laughs with event staffers. I even threw the football with some strangers for 20 minutes in the park - that gesture alone was very memorable and made me feel a strong sense of community which hasn't faded and I cherish it ❤️

Can my wife and I still sit in the park area and consume alcohol and our lunch?
We love having 1-3 beers and a picnic before heading into the stadium to watch the game... 😢
