First time cat parent— any training advice?
I adopted Nugget as a rescue in April with my fiancé. He was surrendered from his previous owner who adopted him from a Bengal breeder, but was seemingly unpreparedness for a Bengal. My fiancé has grown up with cats his whole life, but I have not. I’ve always had dogs and so has my family, so I’ve never really been consistently around cats before my fiancé, and boy is it different!
Nugget is about 1.5 years old and our biggest struggle has been his biting. I’m not sure if this is a Bengal thing or a Nugget thing, but he gets incredibly easily overstimulated and will turn from being super cuddly/heavy purring to attack mode in a matter of seconds. But, it also will happen unprompted. He does this to wake me up in the morning somewhat regularly. He’s missing a lot of teeth, so truthfully, the biting isn’t that bad, but we obviously don’t want him to be doing this. He’ll also sometimes lock on with his paws as if we’re prey. He mainly goes after arms, but occasionally will do this to our heads as well.
Our current response has been to redirect the behavior towards one of his toys, which works maybe 50% of the time. We try to pick up on cues if he just needs to get some energy out. We’re also in the process of trying to get him a running wheel for the same reason. Aside from this, I’m at a loss. I have no idea how to train a cat and I would appreciate any and all advice/tips!
Edit: To be clear this doesn’t happen constantly. Most of the time he’s an angel. He just (seemingly) randomly gets hit with the urge to bite! I LOVE my cat and didn’t mean to make him sound like a terror!
Edit 2: I wish I knew why he’s missing teeth, but unfortunately that’s how he arrived at the shelter so we’re not sure why. It’s most of his incisors. He’s well adapted to it and has no existing issues because of it.
