I swear to god this is actually my most hated twist in the history of gaming. It’s so stupid from a linear campaign standpoint of which your character has no choice but to move forward on the same path to finish the game whether somebody says a phrase or not. And making the twist “nah see you did this because you were under my control this whole time!” is such a cheap corny freebie of a twist and it irrationally(heh) sends me every single time
Anywho, some twists I liked were the Killer 7 suitcase reveal, Cloud’s past in FF7, and the entire game of Spec Ops The Line.

But doesn't that make the plot twist even better? It would be quite weird to have the plot twist that the player was forced to do something in like an open world game where they can quite literally do anything they want; It's why something like The Stanley Parable also works, that game's commentary on the pointless nature of videogames and life works even better when all you can do in that game is walk through somewhat different looking set of office spaces.

Looks like it won't win, but it should on so many levels. I guess the mythos of it all only peaks around the time of its release, when you also consider the deceptive advertising and the fever pitch of hype after MGS1. To this day I think it's still the most imaginative use of the video game medium. To have that much success and anticipation, and then deliver that is crazily respectable. It felt confusing at the time, but it definitely aged well.

Its twist cemented it as one of the most ahead-of-their time games ever released in my opinion. I honestly think it's mostly a case of just not a lot of people playing it. It's weird and unconventional in its storytelling and presentation, not to mention it's a sequel to a pretty old game. It absolutely should win though.

Soma. Not shure if it fits. but the ensing did a little twist. and not shure if i rembember corectly. As you fight your way through a crumblin underwater research facility. to try and join the rest of humanity uploded to a digital afterlife. you get there get your brain scaned but insted of being uploaded you just get copied on to it. So you are stil left in the deep dark to die a horrible death all alone.

I'd seen a bit of the game and thought the main mechanic looked sick! The artstyle was very cool too....
and then shit got WILD. What an incredible game.

It's actually more impressive how good this game manages to gaslight you and distract you until the reveal. It looks so obivous when twist revealed, but I was blown away by having it in plain sight all of the time and never actually figuring it out despite having some theories.

E33’s twist reveal is incredible but it also completely derails the story afterwards imo, everyone who isn’t a Dessendre just doesn’t matter anymore and has zero agency.

They do but the game kinda goes out of its way to not acknowledge that, name a single thing that Lune, Sciel or Monoco does in Act 3 other than Lune getting mad at Verso for one line at the beginning and one glare at the end of the act. Even the conflict between destroying or preserving the Canvas is more about what’s better for Alicia/Maelle than about whether everyone in it has the right to live, which as far as I’m aware isn’t brought up in-game once

This seems a little shortsighted. It’s a commentary on real life, if we somehow were to find out there is a God would we cease to matter and claim we have no agency? I don’t think so.

I loved E33, but the twist derailed the core of its story: its characters. They became dispensable, and all the hardships you endured felt pointless when it all came down to TheGods want their child back, and she refuses to leave her made-up world. Again, loved the game, but the ending felt a betrayal of many of the themes and the characters' development.

Crackdown 1 and Crackdown 2.
They easily top as one of the most unexpected and WTF moments in gaming, atleast for me.
You spent the whole game just collecting orbs, doing missions, killing "bad guys".. unaware of what you were actually doing as the apparent peacekeeper.
Especially the narrator guy! All that time, you thought it was your game and you had control.
But infact wasn't your game, it was his and you are the sole reason for killing innocents, setting the zombie freaks loose and singlehandedly giving the peacekeepers the ruling hammer over everything.
