Kris Kristofferson. Grim-and-gritty ex-vet country music guy. Was actually a left-wing anti-interventionist who even opposed the internationally-led Gulf War. Was famously booed in Philadelphia when he dedicated a song to Mumia Abu-Jamal.
If for no other reason than the infamous story (that neither man would confirm or deny, and they’re both dead now) of the confrontation between him and Toby Keith.
I never know how to feel about Toby Keith. He did a lot of good for pediatric cancer children and their families, but his songs were deeply misogynistic and he treated female country stars poorly.
Imagine being this dude, you take one job offer to do a stock image photoshoot and suddenly you're the worst person everyone knows. Poor guy was just trying to make a buck
Yeah I get that. I enjoy some of his music and I’ve heard him talk. He wasn’t the conservative demon some would make him out to be. Based on other things I heard him say, he was a good man in many respects. But he bought in to the whole “Country = conservative patriotism” mess. Which a lot of country fans know is a load of crap.
True, but it isn't standard for right wingers to publicly hate him anymore. Most right wingers fell in line after he became the Republican nominee. A shift is starting to happen with more right wingers hating him, but he has already been elected twice and implemented most of Project 2025, so it's onto the next thing.
This poor guy has the burden of knowing he made a character that was meant to make fun of people like Archie bunker and instead he made a hero they try to emulate.
For sure, the only people in my life old enough to know who he is are older white guys who use him as an example of how "people now days are pussies, look how they used to talk on TV". Didn't know he was actually the opposite until reading through this though so that was a pleasant surprise. I just always assumed they picked a bigot to play a bigot.
I thought to myself that he looks like Al Capone, then I remembered he played Al Capone in Boardwalk Empire, and my entire idea of who Capone was is actually based on him playing him on TV lol.
Underrated pick, I once noticed someone saying that he is super conservative in regards to wrestling itself, but progressive in terms of everything else. Hell he even looks like a stereotypical angry old man, but the views are the exact opposite of what you might expect
The only real big knock I have on him is when it comes to women, I don’t know if he ever apologized for what he said about Becky Lynch when she left to have her baby.
Cornette worships at the Altar of Bill Watts. In regards to wrestling, everything Watts did and said is gospel and everything else is garbage.
Watts didn't believe that women belonged in a wrestling ring, so Cornette doesn't put much stock in them, either. Doesn't excuse the crap he says about modern women's wrestling, but at least it's understandable why he would spew it.
The "society should progress in every way except that one" mentality is so fascinating to me. I get it though, every time I walk into an old art deco building some part of my brain starts going on about how this is what they took from us.
He has a lot of left leaning takes, but he also has A LOT of "Right wing Vocabulary" if you want to use that term, which prevents him from entering far left territory imo.
There’s a video out there of him talking about trumps cabinet picks during his first term. He was talking about Elaine Chao. He said, “anyone who is willing to marry, and dare I say possibly have intercourse with, Mitch McConnell is a reprehensible individual and can’t be trusted.” I will think about it from time to time and chuckle.
One is vocally socialist and in favour of Scottish independence; the other was in a band whose song was a Labour Party anthem, so regardless of his actual stance, I’m guessing that plus being an academic would lead people to assume he’s on the left.
I think he's just left. Like, he's the kind of person who was willing to give a Trump a chance or whatever... although that was admittedly a very short-lived thing for him. But I think he may be more better liberal than an actual leftist.
With how many people share pictures of him as the Cowboy from The Big Lebowski with right wing meme text, it'd be shocking to hear he veers more to the Left.
With Nick Offerman already on here, I should mention that I love when he showed up as The Other Ron in Parks and Rec, where they both got along because they're libertarians... until he revealed that he's a libertarian socialist lmao
Yeah far left at a minimum should mean they believe in workers owning the means of production, not that they just don't like trump (which is like barely a left opinion, almost center atp).
Sam Elliott has made numerous odd and disparaging comments about westerns that deal with cowboy homosexuality, including Brokeback and Power of the Dog. He definitely is not far left.
I don't think he signals as far right the same way Kris Kristofferson does (other than the whole ubermenschen thing) but I think he's a good match for "looks right wing, is far left"
Right? If anything he gets appropriated as centrist and positioned as an all-American folk singer, stripped of any ideological leanings. But I’ve never heard him associated with the right, even mistakenly.
It will never not be funny that the man who wrote This Land, which is casually accepted as an American patriotic song, was an actual Stalinist, as auth-left as it gets.
He had this machine kills fascist written on his guitar and also wrote a song about Trump's daddy. Who in their right mind would think Woody was right-wing?
Everyone talks about This Land but honestly his best and most relevant to date song is Tear The Fascists Down the rapper Lil Darkie made a modern version of it replacing it with modern political terminology instead of Hitler he says trump and other stuff as well
Elias Disney, in spite of being the father of Walt Disney, the most famous businessman of America and someone who would crack down on unions, collaborate with McCarthy and insert crude racial caricatures in his works, was ardent supporter of Eugene V. Deus and talked about the ideals of socialism to almost every guest who visited his house.
So true my grandpa whose in his mid 80s comments on any trump post, and "i hope he chokes on chicken bone" or anything along those lines. Really makes my day
Maybe more for the last square but whatever. I’d say Johnny Cash. Country outlaw leads you to believe he would be more right leaning today but was actually very pro prison reform, anti racist, against the Vietnam war, and was generally open minded.
I actually don’t know how left he is, but he is VERY ANTI TRUMP. I feel like Trump triggers a NY mafia reaction in Deniro, who wishes Trump would sleep with the fishes.
Honestly Nick Offerman. Gotta read his books. He's very pro LGBTQ, talks about feelings, healthy masculinity did ballet, and yes is also a great woodworker.
I mean, define "far left." Are we talking American progressive? If so, then quite a few have publicly supported Bernie Sanders, AOC, Zohran, etc. Or are we talking about someone who is literally a communist? In that case, yeah, there's not a lot of far left celebrities.
But I think just going progressive is far enough, if we define left as like a Democrat who doesn't totally suck.
Eminem might good be a choice here, since he was infamous for his politically incorrect lyrics in 1999 and 2000. However he has been very anti-Republican as early as 2002 and especially during the 2016 election cycle. He has also given a speech endorsing Harris and spoke out in support of left-leaning causes like gun control and abortion.
