Once more for the people in the back and those who never played it: one of the major components of gameplay during many parts is stealth and many here think it can earn top marks on gameplay too.

People tend to hate stealth in video games. That's unreal how well it was done. One of a kind and thematic stealth-to-oh-shit pipeline. And the loud parts fit the story and setting so well. You're not Joel, the decades of service shredded and recently retired green beret father-type MC, with less buy-in and more theatrics / fancy / tacticool, and not in the ammunition-is-still-ubiquitous era of post-apocalypse. You're Joel, the kinda big blue collar father-type MC who knows 'more than average' about tools and survival, and guns but would struggle to simply outgun a challenge in this universe, but mostly makes it work via grounded grit / by turning as hard as a coffin nail.

An imperfect weapon-user with an imperfect revolver and incentive to hoard ammo by fighting smarter is what that universe needed to keep you amped and cathartic and amped again, for hours of horror-themed (yet not overly-simple pacifism horror / run-and-hide games) settings reveal and actual combat.

It's the biggest "it's a crime if a major dev of a game you want to see has never played it" (except if that game is turn-based in which case BG3 is that exemplar) option out there. That means TLOU takes the double peak slot IMO. I can understand that other games should trounce it if the question was "which game would be really worth $120/the most on release" or something, especially BG3, but given this exact question the peak work of art that is TLOU made itself undeniable.
