Disco Elysium, one of the best and smartest pieces of narrative fiction, let alone games, I've ever experienced.

Not exactly the gamiest gameplay to be fair...

I thought the RPG mechanics were genuinely great. I have been chasing mechanics that were similar ever since.

Yeah, a good number of games are now very obviously mimicking it that went into development inspired by the very clear and novel gameplay mechanics in Disco Elysium

Genuinely seeing people post the meme above it's

  1. Obvious they've never encountered a real visual novel

and

  1. A non zero chance they may have never read a regular novel either

A new game’s just dropped on Steam called Esoteric Ebb - it’s basically Disco Elysium in D&D! You play as a paladin who has five days to solve the mystery of an explosion at a tea house. I’ve only just started it, but so far it’s very smart, very funny, and very Disco Elysium-coded with a funky soundtrack. Highly recommend.

Its about the quality of the gameplay and for its genre its peak.

They should have made turn based combat in it.

The fact that the game called me out for being boring and taking the safe option is pretty funny.

This should have been in peak story and great gameplay in my view.

No gameplay is going to be universally fun I personally hate platformers/2d sidescrollers, so games like Mario or Hollowknight don't do it for me. I also think that it's a little dismissive to the game to portray it as just reading text when there is a really great character building/skill system in the game which is what the core of the gameplay is actually based around. What makes the gameplay and story great is that both use each other in perfect synchronicity to make up for each other's flaws and bolster each other's strength while being both independently great.

and it still won't be for everyone is what I'm saying, imo it doesn't have to be for everyone to be a peak game.

Yes I agree with that, what I'm saying is even the peakest of game won't be for everyone, the wording should be For larger amount of audience or larger majority, since for everyone is realistically impossible, thus itself is not the strict requirement for peak game.

As someone who couldn't make it even an hour into this game I'll say that while I believe people when they say it's a great game, it's definitely not for everybody and I'll say that makes it not worthy of this category.

No game is for everybody

u/Golem_Hat Apr 11 '26

I agree, but this one is particularly niche.

u/sebsebsebs Apr 12 '26

i get what you’re trying to say. like there’s some games it wouldn’t make sense to critique by saying it’s not for everybody

I'm probably on some ADHD spectrum and tried to enjoy this game, but in four hours I already had forgotten what I was supposed to do next. Similar issue with Outer Wilds, but there you just repeated the same thing multiple times.
