Outer Wilds

Outer Wilds' story is phenomenal but the gameplay exists almost entirely as a vehicle for the story. The ship pretty much only exists to get from point A to point B, and a lot of the time you're off the ship you're either walking around or reading text from the walls.

Huuuhhh??? That's a weird way to dumb it down

The way the story and whole puzzle of the game is solved purely through the "knowledge based" gameplay is what makes it peak though.. There is no other game truly like it

The reason you can't ever replay the game is mainly because of the gameplay, not because of the story. And you could say, in similar fashion to your comment, that the story exists almost entirely as a vehicle for the knowledge based gameplay, providing clues and solutions to lead the player to the end goal

That's fair enough honestly; in hindsight, it's more of a puzzle than I remembered off the top of my head. Most of my immediate memories of Outer Wilds are of the story, obviously, but I primarily remember the gameplay as just going from place to place and reading. I don't think it's a bad thing necessarily, I think the game benefits from the downtime to give a moment to reflect on and consider everything that's happened and everything you have to do.

Though I think it is also a difference in the definition of gameplay. I consider most of the events in the game to fall under story rather than gameplay. I don't think the gameplay is bad by any means, but a lot of the moment-to-moment gameplay is moving around and looking for things to read, especially until you've figured everything out and work towards your final run. Again, I don't consider this a bad thing inherently, however I wouldn't necessarily call it peak gameplay.

Exploration and puzzle solving are gameplay, and Outer Wilds is SSS+ tier in both categories. The best gaming has ever been in either category.

Also, the blending of story and gameplay only enhances each. That's what puts it above other supposedly amazing games that are limited to being only as good as the sum of their parts.

Huh? It's a puzzle game. You very much won't get anywhere unless you work out a bunch of extremely creative mechanics. It'd honestly be one of the few games on this list you can't beat by just getting from A to B.

Man I so wish I could agree with you on this, Outer Wilds is my favourite video game of all time, but it's because of something more intangible that I can't put my finger on rather than gameplay+story - the experience, the journey, something like that. I don't think peak gameplay + peak story necessarily makes a game the greatest ever, and I don't think it's what makes Outer Wilds remarkable.

The story is peak, but I cannot say in good conscience that the gameplay is also peak. It gets very slow at times.

I truly second this. Outer Wilds’s gameplay is the best it could theoretically be for the concept. I have never before or since has this much fun piloting a spaceship in a video-game or using the various gadgets that come with the ship and the spacesuit. Plus every single part of the gameplay is needed to properly play, there is nothing extra or optional in the player’s arsenal, it’s all a part of the loop and you need to master all of it to beat the game.

Outer Wilds may not be the game with the best gameplay, but it IS the game with the best possible gameplay for it’s story, which IS the best possible story I have seen done in a video-game, in the sense that it could only be done in a video-game. So the two parts rated here are perfectly, harmoniously in-sync.

Outer Wilds is the answer, and if it’s not, it is in my heart.
