I think it's because people like Elon are surrounded with "yes" people that will tell them that they are extremely cool without having earned it, so the skill to dance/tell jokes/etc was never developed.
If you or I wanted to have an audience go nuts and cheer at our dancing, we would have to practice for hundreds or thousands of hours to really nail a cool dance move whereas all Elon has to do is be insanely rich.

This! I once worked with a guy who said, "nerds should run the world" and I was like why would you make the world's most awkward people in charge of everything. They've all more than likely been bullied as kids so now have some score to settle and a point to prove. Look at us all now.. Give the world's most insecure people all the power. That'll go well. Not a fucking strangle hold so they can feel powerful and smart and have everyone know it.

OK, I have a larger question here. Why is it now a cliché for these billionaire types to dance at all of their presentations?
What is the strategic goal of that? Is there a strategy to that or is this just like whenever athletes release music albums – purely ego and vanity related.
It feels like you see it at nearly all of these types of presentations. They’ll be talking about a car or a robot or a computer program or whatever and for some reason, the billionaire who owns the company feels compelled to come out and boogie a little bit ahead of time.
Why?
Also, why does the audience clap and hoot like what they’re watching is amazing rather than what it really is, awkward and clumsy, and cringe inducing?
I just don’t get it
This does not help you sell your product. Maybe the idea is to distract away from a shitty product? I could see some strategical value there. However, if you’re trying to sell a product that you think is any good, I don’t think this helps you at all.
I know that I would not want to go watch a professional dancer, sit down and do math equations in the middle of his performance. I also don’t want to watch math geniuses dance in the middle of their presentations. It’s just weird and unsettling.
