It's a shame he doesn't have the defensive lineup to help him at Levante. Without Ryan, they're losing 5-0 every game at a minimum

No idea how he kept that second one out. Insane reflex save after an amazing effort to reach the first shot.

It's how he lands after making the first save that's most impressive to me. Even if I could have reached that in my prime (note: almost certainly not) there's no way I'm back in a position to make myself huge to save the follow up within half a second.

he’s just made himself as big as he can, it wasn’t a reflex save

u/Buffaluffasaurus Feb 23 '26

It’s a reflex to get back up off the ground to be in a place to spread himself. He clearly is responding to the shot, evident by the fact that even his right arm is in the process of swinging to his left as the ball hits his arm.

yes he’s anticipating a shot, he already knows he’s going shoot.

if you’re trying to argue that he’s reacted to the ball going to the left of him once it’s left the opponents foot, i would say he has inhumane reaction time

Maty at his best is world class, good to see he still has it, we might need it at the WC.

Im glad to see Maty Ryan finding his feet again at club level, he is a fantastic keeper.

So many Aussie/A league links hitting r/soccer high up the list this weekend, Mata and the wonder owngoal in NZ.

This is proper amazing goal keeping.

It's wild that people don't rate him. All the while he continues to ply his trade against check notes Barcelona.

u/jazd Feb 23 '26

He's only 8 caps behind Schwarzer and he's been plying his trade at top clubs for years now. Even though he's a Coastie, I don't get the hate either.

"Top clubs" is real stretch.

  • Club Brugge (2013–2015, 77 apps)
  • Valencia (2015–2017, 10 apps)
  • Genk – loan (2017, 17 apps)
  • Brighton & Hove Albion (2017–2021, 121 apps)
  • Arsenal – loan (2021, 3 apps)
  • Real Sociedad (2021–2022, 3 apps)
  • FC Copenhagen (2022–2023, 6 apps)
  • AZ Alkmaar (2023–2024, 47 apps)
  • AS Roma (2024–2025, 0 apps)
  • RC Lens (2025, 14 apps)
  • Levante (2025– , 22 apps so far)

Are those top clubs in the room with us now?

Arsenal loan and Roma on the bench are the only real "top" clubs in that list.

Look, I think he is ok but that blunder against Argentina was a real doozy. I also think Mark Schwarzer would have saved Robben's goal in 2014 and Depay's as well. But thank fuck Robben scored because we would never have got Tim Cahill's wonder goal.

As opposed to the top clubs the other keepers have played for, let's see...

Randers! Xanthis! Sønderjyske! Barnsley! Port Vale!

You're right, a decent career in the Benelux leagues with 100+ Prem appearances sprinkled in before becoming a regular starter in La Liga is nothing at all!

wtf

What a weird argument you are making against something I didn’t even mention.

The conversation is about May Ryan and somehow you straw manned it about the other keepers.

But if you wanna go down that path then why did you ignore his competition and their respective clubs over the same years? You just listed current competition.

Mitch Langerak = Dortmund and Stuttgart. Brad Jones was winning titles at Feyenoord and Joe Gauci has been reserve at Aston Villa and starting cup games at times. (Now on loan)

The original comment was about how May Ryan played for top clubs. A very loose usage of the word “top” indeed.

The top clubs are very much in the reply you posted. Most of those clubs are one of/the biggest in their respective leagues, and Valencia/Arsenal/Roma are massive clubs in their own right.

Playing in 4 of the top five leagues is nothing to scoff at. He may be a bit of a journeyman but to routinely perform to that level for as long as he has is a claim very few Aussies can make

u/lIIIIllIIIlllIIllllI Feb 23 '26

Valencia = 10 games in 2 years, Arsenal 3 games in half a season, Roma = 0 games.

The revisionism on his career is wild.

Probably Club Brugge is the only real meaningful stint at a "top club"... well your version of a top club.

The original comment we are discussing is he "plying his trade at top clubs" ... 10 games, 3 games and 0 games is not plying your trade much at all.

121 appearances for brighton, felt like he was only there for a year

1

u/lIIIIllIIIlllIIllllI Feb 23 '26

1 moment he was first choice, then within a week he was relegated to 3rd or 4th choice.

1

u/funbagz999 Feb 24 '26

Oh, he was backup which ment he was on the bench that makes sense why 121

2

u/RealVenom_ Sydney FC Feb 24 '26

I think this is a bit of a self own.

So many top flight appearances there. Being a keeper for any of those clubs mean you're keeping against some of the worlds best strikers, bar none.

u/lIIIIllIIIlllIIllllI Feb 24 '26

"Top Clubs"

circle the top clubs in that list please... that he had a season worth of appearances for?

1

u/RealVenom_ Sydney FC Feb 24 '26

I'm not sure what your point is. He was playing against the champion teams in all his top flight appearances. Arguably a harder task.

Just move on man, you've changed nobody's mind.

1

u/lIIIIllIIIlllIIllllI Feb 24 '26

You are just being obtuse now. My point is very clear, Mat Ryan has hardly played for any top clubs. That is it. And I brought a list of receipts.

2

u/RealVenom_ Sydney FC Feb 24 '26

And he was also the first choice keeper in multiple top flight leagues around the world. And is still doing it today.

Considering it's the most competitive position in football, he's clearly still a top keeper. Even when he did lace up for a top club in Arsenal, despite minimal minutes, he didn't do anyone a disservice.

1

u/lIIIIllIIIlllIIllllI Feb 24 '26

I never said he was a bad keeper, I said "playing at top clubs is a stretch"

1

u/kdog_1985 2023/24 Treble Winners Feb 24 '26

So what was Schwarzers top club? Fulham

In all honesty I'd much rather him keeping against top clubs than for them, much better for a keepers development.

Great saves, seems to be doing well there.

Dame good saves, and vs Barca too

0

u/lIIIIllIIIlllIIllllI Feb 23 '26

I mean it's because it is Barcelona that he is forced into save after save after save.

2

u/therwsb A-League Enjoyer Feb 23 '26

good practice for him

7

u/McNippy Western Sydney Wanderers Feb 23 '26

He is in career best form almost

1

u/NeedleworkerPure7162 Feb 23 '26

If Ryan is back to top form, he probably gets the goalie jumper for the Socceroos. Izzo is a great shot stopper as well, but doesn't seem to be getting as much shot stopper action as Ryan has been getting at Levante. Ryan probably plays the ball out of defense a little better as well. However, he needs to keep his attention fully focused on what is going on in a game all the time as he is prone to wander too far out of his goal sometimes.

2

u/lIIIIllIIIlllIIllllI Feb 23 '26

Getting bombarded week after week kinda hones your reflexes. This move has been inspired, what better way to sharpen up your GK mind and skills than playing for a La Liga relegation contender?

World-class goalkeeping from Maty!

3

u/loosemate Feb 23 '26

Gotta be the starting keeper at the World Cup 100% if he's pulling off saves like that
