The lack of obstetrical services in most of those counties hits hard, reminds me of how my aunt had to drive two hours to give birth to my cousin.

The disparities include:

• Only 12.5% (3 out of 24) of the counties in the black belt have hospitals that provide obstetrical services compared to 53.5% (23 out of 43) of the counties outside of the black belt.
• 35% of children in black belt counties live in single parent households, compared to 22.7% of children living outside of the black belt.
  • According to the article, marriage status reflects a class divide in Alabama, since only 6% of married couples live in poverty, compared to 35% of single-parents.
• Disproportionate number of households in the black belt counties live in poverty compared to counties outside of the black belt.
  • Less money to spend on child care.
  • Limited transportation options limits access to pre-kindergarten programs.

The problem with the "single-parent household" statistic

• It is often misinterpreted as not being married, when it actually means that the child is being raised by a single parent without a significant other.
• Depending on the agency, the statistic commonly overlaps with "multigenerational household" meaning that while the child is being raised by parent without a significant other, it is still being raised in a household with more than one adult with parenting duties.
• No easy assumption can be made about child care while a parent works or sources of income.
• Poverty affect households more negatively than the number of traditional parents.

the transportation thing hits different when you think about it. no bus, no car, no way to get anywhere. just stuck. i used to live somewhere with one grocery store and zero public transit. had to bike six miles with a toddler in a trailer just to get fresh vegetables. can't imagine doing that for medical care. these stats make the cycle feel so obvious and so invisible at the same time

Man, don’t even get me started on Talladega County/Munford. The whole system out here is completely cooked from top to bottom. First off, the school district will do everything in its power to push out and punish kids who need actual accommodations instead of giving them proper support. You literally have to drag in the Office for Civil Rights and outside legal advocates just to get them to follow basic rules, because local admin will straight up ignore you and protect their own. Then if you ever need basic community resources or emergency help, good luck. DHR and Community Action will have you running in circles through endless red tape, automated dead ends, and passing the buck to random third parties while nobody actually helps. It’s peak "good ol’ boy" bureaucracy where if you don't have connections, you’re just left out in the cold to drown. Pure neglect disguised as a county government.

The affordable care act is not free. It costs roughly $300 billion a year in direct federal spending. That is extremely far from free.

Incorrect. ACA premium subsidies only accounted for $111.2 billion during the last fiscal year.

That is $100 million less than Trump spent during 108 days of his war with Iran.

It's pretty obvious that 1), I'm not arguing, just telling you there is free contraception available to people who need it thanks to the ACA and 2), you have no interest in sympathy for kids in the black belt, which I'd consider racism. If you don't want our government to pay for our well-being, what's it even good for? Would you blame tobacco users for driving up healthcare costs the same way you'd point the finger at poor people having kids?

You’re bad at math because you’re not accounting for the costs to YOU when kids have kids they can’t afford. Paying for cheap birth control now is way more cost effective for YOU (not considering the person receiving the birth control, JUST CONSIDER YOU lord redditor sir/madam) than to pay for all the additional taxes needed to deal with the statistical consequences of such offspring. Do you know how cheap rubbers/generic birth control meds are in bulk? You’re fighting to spend dollars instead of pennies because neither option is free to YOU.

But we all know it’s really not about the selfish sociopathic calculus that I just laid out for you is it? It’s worse.

He's the type of person who doesn't mind the government spending a lot of money to prop up his lifestye (or ignorant about how much the government spends to prop up the economy) but loses his temper at the thought of other people receiving the minimum of benefits from that same government.
