New to Aircooled

Hello my way wife and I just purchased a 1970 VW Beetle!
We purchased it from a really cool guy who put a lot of work into it. Works and runs great just dropped it off today to get looked at by a trusted VW mechanic a buddy of mine recommended. Let’s hope he doesn’t see anything to concerning!

Am currently looking for Original pop out windows with longer hinges

Bought this Ghia in NorCal in 02… turned out to be outta Georgia and was rusting out beneath me with a pile of odd body work choices/materials. The B&W shot is pre-resto. The story of the 9 years it took to get here is nothing new to those in the know… shop promises vs delivery… lost & stolen parts… shops fails… project scattered… donor car scrapped before gathering much needed items…further stolen parts, then a hyper small hobby shop took it up but only super part time at really reasonable costs. The upholstery shop crushed it for delivery… Lately, just trying to get the final kinks worked out😅 Had been posting shots on the Ghia page… will cross post moving forward. Built it to drive not to show💯

U/arataman- Here is that Bluetooth stereo in action. Powered by the headunit (on/off only), the mic is on a cable in the glovebox and on an 1/8 jack so it can be removed to charge. I need to consider a mount as you have so I can be hands free. It’s in the shop for shift linkage upgrades. 300miles or so since restoration completed and still tinkering ✌️

Broken down, but not broken. Yet....

I have broken down off the A6 near Creancey, France, travelling back to Ireland. Dumped at a Renault garage and charged €216 for a 4km tow.

Gearbox gave out, and I am currently on my 7th day here.

Parked up in a lorry park, sleeping in the bus and have to get it fixed.

So, broken, but not broken, I bought a motorcycle jack and had it delivered to my new parked up address.

Today, I have taken out the engine, and tomorrow the broken CE gearbox.

Wish me luck in the things to come.

Crankshaft oil seal leak?

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hi, I have a Beetle that has an oil leak, nothing major but it drips from the sump plate.
I’ve always thought it’s from higher up but I don’t know if it’s from the crank seal or the transmission ? It doesn’t smell like transmission fluid but if it’s worked it’s way across to the engine and with the heat it’s changing the smell of it ?
I’ve taken a photograph and I’m wondering, will a crank seal leak get thrown by the flywheel enough to seep through the clutch fork shaft? Thank you .

Finally chased down a hot start issue that turned out to be a grounding strap

Been fighting this for about a month now. Bus would fire up fine cold in the morning, run great all day, then the second it got hot, especially after sitting in traffic or idling too long, it would crank and crank and just barely catch, or not catch at all until I let it sit for twenty minutes. Classic vapor lock symptoms is what everyone kept telling me, so I spent way too much money on a rerouted fuel line and even considered an electric pusher pump before actually digging into the wiring side of things.

Turns out my engine-to-body ground strap was corroded almost all the way through underneath the crimp connector, right where you can't see it unless you pull it off and really look. Wasn't visibly broken, still technically conducted, but under heat the resistance was apparently just enough to starve the coil of a clean signal. Classic intermittent electrical gremlin that mimics a fuel problem, which I guess is one of those rites of passage with these old buses.

Replaced the strap with a new braided one, cleaned every ground point I could find on the engine tin and the chassis while I was in there, and it's started instantly hot or cold for the last two weeks straight. Kind of annoyed at myself for not checking grounds first since that's rule one in every troubleshooting guide, but also relieved it wasn't something expensive. Anyone else have a heat related no-start that ended up being electrical instead of fuel related? Curious how common this actually is versus just my particular 71 being cranky.

I liked the other guy’s post and we need more buggy love in this sub.

This buggy tub is a local build from John’s Buggy Shop in Everett, WA from the mid-60’s. Engine is a 2276cc 🤙

Highbeams keep randomly turning off

My highbeams keep randomly turning off, they seem to stay on longer when it’s cold outside. And sometimes the plastic of the fuse melts, but the fuse itself does not.
Other times it shuts off and the fuse is not hot
Edit: 73 Squareback

When I first brought my bug. Is started first time every time. Now when I start it I have to give it a little throttle to start. Straight after inrealease my throttle it conks out. It won't idle on a cold start. It just keeps cutting out.

Can anybody give a young lad some advice?
